Talk to your local nursery about how to recitify the situation.

Their advice was to simply add new sod....and it's about $7 a square. That would really add up, so they were not very helpful. The photos are of just one bad area , there's more.

It's possible that if you overseed with winter ryegrass (and it rains this winter) that it will still look good in June.

You could pick out a 5 foot by 5 foot area, water it, aerate it, put a good layer of compost over it, and then water it every three days for a month. If it looks better, you will know what to do. Realistically, the drought is very real and your water bills will skyrocket if you water the lawn much. Many St. Augustine lawns are looking pretty bad right now. Sometimes it is a choice between keeping big trees alive or keeping a lawn looking as if there were no drought at all. Check the normal rainfall for your area and what you actually got in the last three or four years.

You can buy a moisture sensor at the garden shop to tell you when to water.

It could also be caused by a bit of thatch build up. This is where older St. Aug dies off, and becomes slightly decomposed. This can make the lawn area more sensitive to drought and cold damage. You can purchase a simple thatch rake at most local garden centers, and combs through the effected area. I would also recommend to replace this area with a few pieces of sod after some aeration as mentioned above as the St. Aug may take longer to grow in than your dead line!
