Only place I see is the entrace walls to dining. A flower pendent or blooming ball type. I like gold satin-like drapes. Put art at the entrance. And at chair on left under light.

Hi rrobles1421, I would suggest a bright, more vibrant fabric for the draperies as well as the captains chairs. The wall color provides a good base it just needs a little more pizazz. Your color palette remains neutral so let your thoughts get to work. The light fixture unfortunately doesn't work, something more in a silver/gold leaf finish would lend itself better. Open, more airy, you need a wow. Hope this helps...............

What color of captains chairs would you suggest? Should they match the curtains? Thanks everyone for the help!!

Here are my other 2 light fixtures we just installed - we are young 30's with a 3 yr old and the house is starting to look too proper and aged to me. It needs an injection of youth, I'm just not sure how best to go about it!

I'd suggest drapery panels that coordinate with the room but also give it some pop! Have attached our Links pattern in Bright Navy. And a crystal chandelier--look at Crystorama on Bellacor.com would be fab. Or a large pendant/chandelier with a cream drum shade.

the 'bling' of the crystal is an excellent choice, but feel the 'links' pattern a bit to casual looking for the formal dining room--

captains chairs in gray [either like the carpet --blue-gray--or like the chair in the living room] and perhaps with a contrast back to match the side chairs. i like the pattern/fabric on the comfy-looking arm chair next to the fireplace-- would be nice for drapes or chairs, depending on scale

Some more colour would help avoid the matchy air. Introduce another colour through different fabrics, art and vases etc. and your instinct about new light is right, that one too heavy.

I can promise you that the Links pattern works beautifully in a formal setting. It's a very updated traditional pattern. But a slightly more muted choice would be our Blue Medallion pattern and a more contemporary choice would be Modern Stripe in Grey/Blue. Hang 'em high and consider a little puddle if using a silk or faux silk like Modern Stripe. Luxury is always in style!

Thank you everyone for your recommendations! I was thinking a blue/gray captains chairs but needed someone to back me up. Regarding the decorator, I just meant we've spent quite a bit of money already and I wouldn't mind changing out this rug, just not as happy with it as some others I've seen but it's too expensive to change out so I need to work around it. My decorator and I started not seeing eye to eye and I'm working on trying to modernize the rest.

My home doesn't get much natural sunlight so I'm trying to lighten/brighten it up as well

I think your rug is quite perfect! If you want see if you'd like the navy captain chairs, get two navy king size sheets and pull over the chair backs. I think it will be too dark though and add more of a traditional look and you really want a transitional look.

I think you need to change the lamp shades to something with a pattern, preferably add in new colors or get a new FUN lamp. Add pillows to the corner chairs in a stripe with more colors. Add a centerpiece that brings in more colors such as orchids in purple in a colorful pot. Add whimsy with the chandelier.

your dining room carpet appears to tie the rooms together very well--and perhaps gives you some direction should you wish to soften the intensity of the dark blue on the walls. the wall colour is VERY dramatic [and beautiful] but perhaps not quite you??
if you had already thought of gray for the chairs, could that be your way of neutralizing the blue?
paint is the least expensive, easiest and most dramatic way to change the feeling in a room. compare the price of a gallon to a single piece of upholstered furniture! -- even hiring a professional to paint makes financial sense in comparison.
you have a strong representation of warm neutrals in your living room, it's good to have a 'cool' place to rest your eye--hence your thought of gray. there are MANY! shades of blue/gray/charcoal that are less 'cobalt' than your existing colour. i would suggest a little research into your 'feelings' around the wall colour before you make any more expensive changes.

I really don't think you need captains chairs. Have you tried opening the leaf, then put all six chairs on the sides, and leave the ends empty? It's a less traditional look.

Hi. Well, I love the light fixture, BUT... it's a tad too casual for the ceiling and dark walls. I like the rug Maybe different drapes, but ... jut don't know. If your living room or kitchen -whichever is closer is more elegant , then yeah change light fixtures ? If you leave light, maybe a more casual chair

You could make it more exciting by adding interesting objects to the dining table. A collection of mercury glass candlesticks, vases. Mismatched crystal candlesticks, a metallic runner, etc. Artful looking objects. Something that says "not traditional" but hints of traditional.

I did have the leaf in with all 6 chairs around the table, then I felt there was something missing in the corners, maybe plants?? so moving the chairs was just an easy/less expensive fix at the time. I just thought captains chairs would add some color/fun to the room. I would like to just be able to sit 8 around the table, and actually with my toddler, there is only room for 6 chairs or the room becomes to tight and I'm afraid he'll run into the table /chairs a lot more so 2 of the original will probably go in the basement unless there's company (which is a shame!)

I am trying to find something to go onto the table that's low enough not to hit a chandelier and high enough to see over the top of the chairs when you walk into the front door... its proving harder than I thought?! Maybe topiary to add some green?

Something green is always great wether it be real or a great artificial. Succulents give great depth and dimension and are low maintenance as well. Try mixing them with a Bromeliad in a group of 3 but in one large container, and top with dried moss. This will look great. Make sure if you go this direction that you water the bromeliad in just in the very center where the flower is, not at the base. Hope this helps.....

I think you are bored because your dining room is beautiful but everything is as it's "expected" to be. There is no art or interesting or unexpected objects. I'd put all six chairs around the sides (with the leaf). Then, a pedestal in one corner with an interesting art object or fabulous vase with texture and style. I think the chandelier is "boring" and bringing in a stylish and "unexpected" light will change the look dramatically. If you want "captains chairs", draping a sheepskin rug on the chairs will give it texture and an unexpected element to the room. If you like the traditional look, you can do matching pedestals flanking the window. Topiary is another traditional look.

But, am I mistaken? Do you want to keep it very traditional looking?

Spice it up with interesting crystal framed mirror & chandelier...an option is to spray paint your furniture with light colour & go with light colour textured wall paper to create intricacy & interest! This will creat a dramatic yet subtle look

Think you hit the nail on the head Darzy! Thats my problem, there's nothing I dont really like about the room but there's nothing I really love either. We bought the home with complete white walls and the original light fixtures from 1995 still in there so that't why the light is still there, I just am not sure what type to put in but I'm pretty sure anything will really help! A lot of good ideas - Thanks so much for all of the suggestions!

to me this room looks a bit heavy. i would lighten it up with crystal chandelier
same thing for curtains you need something light like roman blinds or penal curtains

Pardon my opinion, but that is a luscious blue. I myself am drawn totally to dark colors, so I enjoy the richness and warmth that your room has. But it needs balanced. The bottom half is light with the wainscoting and the light rug. And the tippy top is light with the gorgeous treatment on the ceiling, but the eye gets lost in the middle.

Drapes: How about something like Ballard Design Firenze - a tone on tone with a trendy pattern?
Chandelier - How about Ballard Design Orb Crystal chandelier in silver? Bright metallic with glitz and it will reflect your cage in the foyer (I assume).

Excellent suggestions! I love the Firenze at Ballard & I do like the orb.. Do you think putting silver in a home with no silver is an issue? It's all brass or bronze but I have no problems mixing metals.
