I think those are terrific ideas! I agree withe idea of a console ,bar cart or drinks cabinet for height. Pillows with colors pulled from the kills would warm up the brown leather pieces. The window treatments look a little fancy with the leather maybe you could remove valance and leave side panels . Bamboo blinds could be nice with them to add texture.

If you are going for a more casual feel, I think a multi-tone shag rug, with browns, creams and maybe some orange or salmon colour would make the room very cozy.

For a more formal feel a rug with a dark border and a lighter shade in the centre (something warm) would suit.

Hi -- The first thing is - Do you have a family room or a rumpus room or is this it ? If you do then maybe the sofas and chair would be better suited to that space. The reason I say that is the fireplace is more formal and the furniture and the BAR seems more casual for that room . So if your up to changing the room totally then a more contempoary sofa and two accent chairs and a beautiful area rug would look nice. But getting back to your room now. Your main question was about a rug -- maybe something more modern with colors you like or a plain texture with a border - just make sure it's big enough for all the furniture to sit on . I would set the bar where it will be near the kitchen. Move the piano to another wall if you can and the furniture placement seems fine the way it is . I think drapery panels on the rods would look better than what is there now. No tye backs or swoops .The others are the wrong style era for your home and furniture . Place some larger art work above the sofa add some side tables and lamps. Find a nice larger framed mirror for over the mantel - and only a few accent items like maybe two candle sticks on one side and a decorative sculpture or plate on the other side. I am not in agreement on the rug--I think you should go with the tuscany style--the coffee table looks like that style. then the paint color looks fine but I do agree on the removal of the drapes. they clash with the rest of the room. You might be fighting them if you try to keep them(maybe switch them to a bedroom?) So I think you may need to go classic style--go with the fireplace--formal. Yes, a mirror would open the space up. Candlesticks on either side would be great. Then think of something on the coffee table.Also, I love the idea of a bar or cart--very versitale.

I would like to add one suggestion,bring a small leather rectangular shape ottoman and place it behind the arm chair. Put a nice tray with a small plant and maybe two books.Also you could leave the ottoman open with two or three colorful matching pillows inside.

I agree the drapes need to go. I would use plain colored panels like the above picture. Once the drapes are gone this is a very neutral room. I love the rugs Manon showed because that is my taste, but not knowing your specific taste I would say buy something you LOVE and then pull it all together with the pillows and a throw. I agree the couch needs end tables and lamps at each end with lamps and a nice well proportioned piece of art above the couch. A shot of greenery somewhere would finish the room.

You have a lovely room. I would put a cream or off white rug with a throw over the arm of one of the sofas and some cushions. The throw and cushions could have a brown motif or stripe and maybe another colour as well so that you can continue the second colour in accessories or in artwork around the room.

Kilm rugs are perfect of course, cost could be an issue. A solution I have employed with great success is to go to a carpet store/warehouse, have them cut to the perfect size you need a sisal or sea grass rug and have them bind it. Then you can place smaller kilm rugs on top to suit the arrangement. Pull out a predominant color in the rugs for accent pop.

First, look in your closet and find the color that you like best! Get rid of the window treatments and put in drapes. Could the piano be moved into another room? I would pick a rug, pillows and art in your favorite colors. Is there room to move the couch sideways and then put the 2 chairs across from the couch? I would also add lamps and side tables. Also, I would add a tree in the
corner, with an up-light underneath for mood.

Even if you do not wish to add another leather item, you could get a fabric ottoman but I believe you need one, since the back of the one seater faces the door or the entrance to this room from what I concluded, thus a big dark object is the first thing to see! One more thing... Drapes or keeping the Window treatment? What to choose? I've seen designs with both options and both were very nice, but since I'm not a professional I would choose drapes or window treatments in plain colors to be safe and to be able to play with the accessories and so.Good luck:-)

Go to rug sale sites like rugsale or rugsusa, there are a few good sites, and look at your choices. There are so many choices and you can decide if you are modern or traditional and all in between.

Thank you all for your comments. Here is our problem. The drapes came with the house. Although formal they are very expensive to replace and we would rather invest the money into other pieces of furniture. The leather couches were from our old place and we got new couches for the family room. So, I know they are far from a perfect fit but we would ideally like to decorate the room around the drapes and couches. I am attaching another picture which is part of the room that you cant see in the other pictures. That being said, we could use some more recommendations on rugs that would match the room the way it is, a console type bar, any throws, pillows, and a framed mirror for over the fireplace. Would really appreciate specific recommendations if possible. Thank you again.

You have blinds on the windows so you don't need to replace the drapes, just take them down. They instantly reminded me of a circus tent with the stripes, I would rather have nothing on my windows than weird drapes that someone else chose. The other option is to remove the swag and make these curtains into panels. You have enough material to make extra panels to break up those overly large windows by hanging panels in the middle of the window to make it look like 2 better proportioned windows that 1 big one. If you can sew a straight line you can hem yourself and use curtain clip rings to hang the panels from the rod. Also move the curtain rods as close to the ceiling as possible to play up the vertical aspect.

Hi, mitchellstein. Here are some specific items that I think will work with your current furnishings. The window coverings appear to have gold, terracotta and tan in them (?) so, I've chosen items that echo those colors.

I don't know what your tastes are, but I think if you keep in mind the color palette you currently have, you can find items to your liking.

Several have suggested removing the drapes. Problem with that is, they're the only color in the whole room. Take those out (unless you introduce other color on curtains, pillows, or a rug) and you are on the way to Brown Overload. The rugs shown by Manon are excellent choices, if you want to build on the red/yellow scheme. Add pillows in similar tones to break up the dark brown couches. I'd be careful about adding any more dark brown furniture. I also like the idea of converting the swags to hanging panels on rings - that would be a fresher, more modern look. But if you want to go a whole different color direction, it's not necessarily expensive to replace curtains - places like World Market, Pier 1, even Target sometimes will have some trendy panels for no more than $50-60 a pair, possibly less. Be sure to coordinate your rug and curtains - especially if both will have some pattern to them.

Oh if only I could get my hands on this room!!! if the window treatments are staying....they are formal and the leather pieces are too informal and large for the room. A sectional with a swivel chair would work wonders. Looks like you could use some recessed lighting too. I don't know how you will use this room I am assuming as a formal living room that isn't so formal. At this point if the leather is staying I would select a vibrant area rug that all pieces will sit on. it would have to be rectangular. Something with interest to go with the window treatment.

If you do not wish to change anything, I'm sure adding the right colors and accessories will make your room look nicer and fresher. Brown and black are not scary colors if we know how to soften them, actually they are usually easier to work with. I've seen a nice design where two ladder bookcases are placed on each side of the fb, where you can display a few accessories with the desired colors maybe orange and red as suggested above.

Or red/yellow! You could also take a picture for the fabric of your curtains to show the exact colors.

Sorry , you are making a mistake keeping the drapes . When someone leaves something behind when they sell the house - that means they were Not worth keeping. You didn't pay for them and they don't owe you anything and they are probably 20 years old if not more.If you under 80 years old - then you should not be decorating around them . Nothing you have even goes with them . Just sell them - sorry but to be blunt - they are very ugly. And that's what everyone is nicely trying to tell you. Don't waste your decorating dollars . If your determinde to keep the drape panels at lest take off the swags .

I like the idea of a big shag rug, I'd go with ivory. If you aren't tied to the curtains, they do have a bit of a 'circus big top' feel, I'd look for something more contemporary - with grommets. Check ikea, super cheap, you can find panels for $20 each. Get some big comfy pillows, maybe lose one of the chairs and add a new one to split up the three pc. matching set. Big pc of art over couch. Search "modern country" on Houzz and see if you like that look to help your leather look updated. Floors are beautiful, get a rustic modern coffee table, end table and a lamp. Lay a cozy folded blanket too and you're done!

You have to choose to go with the style of the leather pieces or that of the curtains and coffee table. They will always clash. It won't all come together until you have the rug, wall decor, end tables and lighting. This is no time to be timid! There is little that you buy that cannot be returned! Try something, anything!

If you have to have the piano in the room for the family to enjoy then pull it out from the wall and corner it. Place a tall plant behind it or a tree.

We are in a little over our head with this room. Does anyone know a good but affordable interior decorator in NJ who could help us? Or we would be willing to work with someone over the internet as well who could help us pick out everything from the rug to pillows, etc. Looking for recommendations.

I am not a interior decorator but I would keep the curtains and pick out the darkest color in the curtains and find a rug that has that color mixed with beige or tan . I would pull the piano from the wall and corner it and add a tall plant behind it. I would also mix some pillows of the same shade from the curtains using both solid and prints. I have a feeling that you are trying to do this on a budget. I would add two side tables and some lamps for reading. I would try to find some kind of metal art piece to put behide the sofa. Drape a throw across the back of the loveset. This is for a more casual look.
