While fencing can be expensive to build, it doesn't usually need to be watered, while landscaping does. However, landscaping can add value to your home, and fences can need repair or replacement. Arborvitaes are great for privacy. Or for a faster growing tree a Leland cypress.

My in-laws put some cedar trees when the neighbor's property was sold for townhouses. The cedars seem to have created a nice privacy fence for them in a remarkably short period of time.

Deer love arborvitaes. I have Lelands planted in my yard for a screen. They are starting to look shaggy/leggy.. I also planted some "Green Giants". Which are a cross between an arborvitae and a Leland that the deer don't eat. Green giants have softer leaves and are more compact. I plan on tearing out the Lelands and replacing them with green giants. I'd also recommend staggering them instead of lining them up.
