Need Help With Entryway...Help

I stripped off the wallpaper, had the wall re-textured to a smooth and imperfect surface then painted it with Pittsburgh Desert Camel. I have a large mirror its just not up yet and it's the same color/wood as my table. I just need ideas to make it inviting I'm not good at this. Plus the windows on the sides of the door allow people to look in I had tiny curtain rods and palace panel but I really didn't like it so its gone. Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks.

I think you're off to a great start, and the mirror will be a great addition. Just wondered -- does the table block the doorway at all? It's difficult to tell from the photos.
Looks attractive. I don't think you need to cover the side panels of your entry door. Once the mirror is hung maybe add a live plant to the table top. An umbrella stand would be functional and decorative.
This looks like a beautiful home. Are you concerned that if someone comes to the door that they can see in? I think decorating your table and wall with the mirror will look lovely.
The table doesn't block the entry to the living room the entry is very large. I also need a new light fixture any suggestions? As you can see the small windows have a view to my living room and kitchen. I can paint walls I am just not good at the decorative touches. Not confident enough I guess.

The wall treatment so far is a great step in the right direction, so trust yourself more and have fun with this - design should be about fun and things that we love and make us feel good in our home. You've simplified the design with the wall treatment and I would simplify /freshen up even more. Between the blinds, rug and the table, the room is perhaps still a bit busy with traditional detail; I would replace the blinds with a contemporary, light-weight roman blind, and definitely go for a larger ceiling fixture that's fun and bright. The mirror sounds like a good idea, and art, if you have any that you love. For functionality, the idea of the umbrella stand, if needed, sounds good.

A Roman Blind is nice but it is a huge window, aren't those either up or down? What can I put in the window to have some privacy during the day? The blind slats help some with a total view into my home from the street.

Consider a soft roman blind made with sheer fabric, that will block the view during the day or perhaps some woven shades with a privacy layer. I would also replace the ceiling light fixture with something larger and more modern. A nice table lamps would be great and an orchid on the table. Hope this helps

I know how you feel about the windows at the side of your door not offering privacy at night. I have the same thing and had them fitted with plantation shutters. They can be made at that narrow width. I have the louvers opened wide during the day and closed at night. Matching shutters on the big window would look nice. Love the rug you chose!

Can't tell if you have a outlet by the table, but if so a lamp might look nice there next to the mirror and provide a soft light in the evenings. Hope you find a pretty hanging light as well. Look at Ballard for some possibilities.
I was thinking orchid too! Do you have an example or photo of the shutters and soft Roman Shade? I can sew was thinking of making them. I have never seen shutters that small. If the 2" wood blinds look busy would shutters look as busy? Thanks I found the rug at Ross for $40 what a find and I love it. I just remodeled my kitchen as well been painting like mad went bold in there. and going to be painting my living room with a coordinating color but lighter. Oh and my sons birthday is today he wants his room done for his birthday in Seattle Seahawk colors. Lots to do lol ugh.

The first thing I noticed was the light fixture. It is the type that shines mostly on the ceiling-not a good idea. You need a fixture that has more pretty detail and where the light shines downward to warm the space. Be sure to measure the clearance needed with the light to open the front door without hitting it.
I have a great source that makes decorative privacy glass panels that fit right over your side panel windows. They are so pretty. Let me know if you want to consider that and I will get you in touch with her. She works long distance too.

I put this in my little sitting area and I cannot tell you the compliments I get all the time. Its add a warm glow and its just perfect. I also put cloth wire cover I got in Arhaus. I think a lamp on one side of the table, and maybe a nice flower piece nothing to tall because I would do a little bit of a tall table lamp. also with the flower add like two books with a small candle on it that really makes it cozy. Let me know if the picture came through maybe I can show you mine it looks so much better.

Thank you, yes I would like to see what they look like and cost I kind of ran out of $$ after my kitchen remodel. I live in Northern California 45 min north of Sacramento

Picture came through of light I need to measure to see how much room I have exactly. Never considered that I guess that will determine the type of light I get. thanks for the tip. I want to see the glass panel option (didn't say that in my last post. Thanks.

I feel your foyer is heading in the direction of a modern take on British Colonial with its wide door, wood flooring, window and table style. I would use plantation shutters on the lower portion (natural brown, white or black). An alternative could be Mandalay shades. Add a great chandelier or lantern or even llights on the wall on either side of the mirror. [houzz=

You can change your lighting to a chandelier or pendant. I've picked a range from classic to modern. Feel free to browse our website http://missionwest.biz/lighting/ and contact us for any inquiries. We'd be more than happy to help!

The larger window could benefit from Hunter Douglas Silhouette shades. They are like a soft sheer blind that can be opened to allow filtered light, closed for privacy or rolled all the way up out of sight. You can get simple shirred sheer panels for the sidelights. I agree the space can benefit from a narrow table lamp but since you are changing things up, consider those LED candles. You can find them on QVC and lots of other online sources. They operate with a remote and will help to warm things up. Arrange 3 of different heights in a shallow metal platter with some decorative river stones.

I also noticed that the area rug is a bit contemporary and the table is more of a country style. Perhaps a change in the area rug would benefit the space as well.

Also want to add that you sell yourself short. I think you do have a sense of style. Your paint color is very nice and I love that rug that you found at Ross. Good luck finding a light. There are almost too many choices.
Thank you for all the advice. I found a bunch of those flameless candles at Costco yesterday for $15.99 in a box many dif sizes going to play around with them. like the tray and river Rock idea. I had no idea what my style or my house was, always thought traditional with my huge windows and trim and baseboards everywhere. I like my rug will it still work if I keep it? I kind if painted the room with a color from it. using it as my inspiration. I like the lights as well... will look at your site more.

I think the paint, rug and table look great, but I would recommend a mirror that doesn't match your table - instead try something frameless or with decorative edges. Add a few accessories to your table and you're good to go! PS - are you from Pittsburgh? You me ruined the paint and Ross - my favorite store!

Shades of Light has some very reasonable lights that would look great in your foyer. As for your tabletop, it's a great spot to put a couple of your favorite things, that don't have a home, on a tray. It's a pretty space-and it's yours- so have some fun with it. You don't want it to look like everybody else's.

You might treat the space over the entry table with 2 lamps and a mirror
Side windows could be changed to stained glass?

Here are some ceiling light suggestions. The last two are the same lamp and you can purchase it in any color you want to pick up one from the rug.

A couple of looks for you. You'll have to stay pretty modern with that rug.

I added plantation shutters to the window, but for the expense, I don't think they add that much.
    That looks nice ,Grover.
that is incredible how you did that so I can see what it looks like in my foyer. Very cool!!! I do love the shutters in the window too!!

Chris, you've got a great start on this space. It won't take much to make it sing. I would take rainymorning's advice and look at the window film to address the side lites for now.

The other thing that is crying for action is the ceiling light. Aside from it looking like a cheap builder's special, the main problem is it's just too dinky. Look for a semi-flush mount drum with a diameter about twice the size of the current light. I think those drum lights (from mjjk above) with the funky bottom finials would be fun in this space.

I'm going shopping, thank you for all of your ideas, and your right that light is too small for the large space and windows it is def out of place. The previous owners had light wood flooring and wallpaper from floor to ceiling with a white background and beige vertical stripes. The top had a border of red flowers and green leaves Yuck. The rest of the house had white carpet, pergo and linoleum flooring in the bathrooms/laundry. I ripped it all out and put in wood flooring & a subtle patterned carpet in the living room solid color. No wood in there because of vaulted ceilings, it would be too loud. I have to do the bathrooms still. Takes $$$

Incase you're still considering plantation shutters, here are mine on very skinny windows by the front door. I'm sure it would look better without them, but at night you could see through to the family room from the porch. This is opened and closed.
@Springcath I love the look I'm actually going to look into it now. I made lace panels with top and bottom rods but I took them down because it just didn't look right. From my porch you can see into my living room/dining area and down the hall where the bedrooms are. I need something more flattering and private. Thanks!!

You're welcome. Mine are from Home Depot. BTW, although my husband and I live in the Midwest now, we're native Californians and Chico State grads. Good luck on your project!
The shutters do look handsome. If, however, you find the cost prohibitive, you might like the look of plain white sheers which do afford privacy when they are gathered and add softness.
I have a question... what if my windows next to me front door have only like 1/2" trim around therm. How would shutters look on them? Its not like they are recessed like a window casing so they can't be set inside. they would actually stick out or be up against the window. Is there different widths?
A very inexpensive fix for the windows is to use window film - temporarily while you’re deciding on a more permanent fix. Cut the film to size, spray water on the window, and it sticks. I think the rice paper film is attractive, but there are many others.
Another alternative is to replace the clear glass with patterned glass or leaded or textured glass, without anything getting in the way of your door (curtains & shades may).

    I wish I had sidelites.
My sister has them and they creep her out at night.
I am going to tell her about the plantation shutter idea.

My daughter has sidelites and they are textured glass with some kind of leaded design,
You can see light and color if you try but it is all blurry looking.

Colored glass would be pretty and rainbow like.

    What goes on the table?
Twin lamps would be my choice.

I like the rug and I think it looks fine with the table.

I have the Home Depot window film on my front door. Mine is the frosted glass look, $26, easy to apply, and nobody can see in anymore. Eventually, we're going to get a front door without so much glass but in the meantime, it's a nice, clean solution. The skinny shutter idea looks perfect. I vote for that one. For lighting, Pottery Barn has a lighting sale going on now and Rejuvenation.com has some vintage-looking lights.

I have put my entryway on hold because my son wanted me to decorate his room for his birthday. Since his big brother moved out, he's always had to share so I am doing it. he chose Seattle Seahawks/Sounders theme here is what I have done so far. I do like your ideas will get on those soon as I am done... I'm almost done painting sports logos on the walls then back to the entryway
  • 12 years ago
Just wondering if you finished decorating your entryway. It would be great to see an "after" picture.

Looking for ideas for this table. Looking at purchasing a large circular silver sunburst mirror to place above the table. really want to a pop of color. alt6the walls are cream in tge photo theyve just been painted BM Grant Beige. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Now for this post - if you want bling add a beautiful chandelier to catch light.
I suggest your getting a beautiful ceiling light first and then a mirror that complements the light. A starburst may not work with the traditional style of your table. You may do better to search for an antique mirror. One step at a time -- light fixture first.
