That's one solution. Would you consider extending one of the steps,maybe the top or second one down so that it's deeper( say doubling or 2.5 times the typical depth of the step). Then, at the point where it reverts to "regular" step depth, narrow the stairs and extend them so the edge of the stairs is right next to the support post and looks as if it was designed to end there.

What's wrong with reducing the width a bit?

Contractor came this morning and reduced the width on both sides. We had talked about installing planter boxes or a column fixture on either side, but maybe we won't need it. I was worried that reducing the width would look strange, but I'm thinking it might be alright after all. Still won't be able to turn left at the bottom of the stairs into the patio but that's not a huge deal. (I hope!)
