Love the rug. Maybe it can be used somewhere else. What about a textured rug a bit larger.

For starters, your mirror will look a lot better hung on the wall than resting on the buffet.

Have you considered not putting a rug under the table.
Much easier clean up w/o rug.
also, the light fixture is traditional and the rug contemporary and in this instance I don't think the twain should meet. ;)

Try a gray geometric or bold gray stripe.

I think matchstick blinds would enhance the wall colour and introduce a new textural element. Some greenery would perk things up as well.

You also try and move the curtains up closer to the ceiling.

I appreciate your insight, and anne dee's comment on the contemporary rug versus traditional light fixture. I hadn't paid attention to that before, but definitely see the conflict.
