Can you prop up a few on top of the wainscoting? Then take pics just to see how that looks?

Try your sofa facing the fireplace and the two chairs on either side of the FP facing each other. Like one of these.

I would hang it right on the wainscotting.

As a rule pictures should be hung lower but I think if the art is the right proportion it would look nice on your painted walls.

Yes, put the sofa facing the fireplace and then a fantastic arrangement of pictures over the fireplace and one 3 dimensional piece of whatever you love.
Don't hang pictures all around the room, the look of the wainscoting is so elegant against the wonderful paint color.
If anything, a mural or wallpaper on the fireplace wall would add a nice contrast.
Agree with Vickie that a hanging system could work but as artists who have had to hand too many exhibits with them it would have to be a very special one.

Of course it depends on the size of the picture too. I have seen pictures up above taller wainscotting also in decorating mags.

PLEASE don't hang anything on the wainscoting. It is sculptural and elegant and needs to stand on it's own.

Great ideas. I should say that there will be a TV over the fireplace in the future. We are waiting for the newest technology to cost a little less. All that to say, the furniture is arranged to accommodate my husbands wishes to be facing the TV straight on from these chairs which are recliners in disguise. The house is custom and pure craftsman although we kept cost down by not having the trim stained. My traditional style artwork from previous home is a bit challenging as well. I hope to be able to use it. Can the picture hang from the drywall and lap over the wainscot?

Don't let the paintings overlap the wainscoting, please.
Look into MoveNArt (www.movenart.com) if you are looking to have a tv on such prominent display, It is a great way to put art on your TV (there are limited pieces available on Amazon if you search "streaming art" and if you go to the Move N Art site you'll see more options. Great atmosphere for a party instead of having the TV on.

I've had that in a dining room, though mine was at seven feet. Regardless, I had very large art that was hung as if the wainscot wasn't there, art went above and below. This is obviously a more modern treatment. If you just have small pieces hang on the wall above or mount a shelf on top of the wainscot for art to rest on.

If you avoid the white and only hang in the tan space, you will create a division and lower sight line. Break the line in a few places. Large art or tall mirrors can be hung by first mounting wood the thickness of the top ledge on the tan and then hang the mirror on the wood allowing the mirror to float off the wall and balance the bottom.
