Try turning the mirror on the sideboard the opposite way to make it look taller,pretty curtains hung wide and high with a nice think Rod would look good

Actually, I was wondering if I should have some art or frameless mirror (with a mirrored frame) instead. That one is just sitting there because it got moved with that piece of furniture the other day.

You have a very lovely room to work with. Nice color. Love the wide baseboards. Nice rug and furniture. What is that large piece of art? It needs a big wall. I think it's too big to hang above the sofa. I would remove the mirror from the sideboard for the time being. It gives the feel just now of being a bedroom dresser with mirror. Looks like you could use some end tables and reading lamps which you already said you want. Is the big black structure a fireplace? Need a few more photos of the other end of your room.

The room is over 22 feet long, so I'm hoping that when that big armoire is out of there, the art will look fine. It will be the only thing on that wall. I hadn't thought about curtains. We actually don't have any window coverings in our whole house! What did you have in mind? I'm open to ideas.

Also, you are right about the mirror giving it a bedroom look:) I'll take it down. The dark structure holds our tv and covers a huge ugly rad that we use for heat. It also holds DVD, movies, sate light boxes etc.

Lovely room, the black TV cabinet is quite overpowering, but when you hang the painting it might balance it out.
I'm thinking a lovely round pedestal table with a lamp on it in the corner behind the chairs. A round table would 'copy' the lovely ceiling roses.

I really can't tell for sure if that picture will work over the sofa. Is it framed? It may overpower the sofa and look more impressive on a wall by itself. Just seeing it there I think its size makes it look heavy and one gets the feeling if seated upon the sofa that it could fall on a person. (Not that it would but just the feeling it might arouse.) Keep in mind that space is just as important an element in a room as mass. A big picture can be beautiful on an otherwise empty wall and may indeed be calling out for that honor.

Difficult to say, but if you don't centre the picture to the sofa (once the armoire is gone), but put it more to the left, it will not be one big mass with the sofa. I'll see if I can find an example.

Thank you. I'll hang the picture when the wall is clear and you can tell me then if it's bad or good. I like the idea of a round table behind the chairs. Should it be wood? Painted? Colour?

Do you think a cream, plain rug would look better in here? I am considering moving this rug to my bedroom (unless I find it too busy). It's too high maintenance for this living room

A solid cream rug would not add any pizzazz to the room. I like the rug you have. If you keep it in the living room just add a few touches of the blue. If not, something with texture and a bit of color.

Thy painting the TV cabinet. It is overwhelming. The room is nice.

If you can take one or more photos when the armoire has been moved, it will give us a better idea of how your room looks. I love the rug, would be sorry to see it go, but if it doesn't work for you due to maintenance... Although I can't see how a solid cream would be less maintenance? Am I missing something? :-)

Ha ha! This rug was expensive and I am always checking the kids' feet to make sure they are really clean (barefoot in the summer is nice, but has it's problems in this case). Someone went in there with dirty feet and there is a nice mark to show for it and it wont completely come out. We have a lot of little ones in and out as well and Im always telling them they are not allowed in there. I just want it to be user friendly and I don't want to be paranoid when I have company - adults or children- that something with get on the carpet. I saw on HOUZZ a room that had the exact couch in this colour. the room had a wood coffee table and some more relaxed and fun pillows. The rug was a light nickel colour, but looked kinda creamy. As soon as I saw it, I thought,"oh now that room looks beautiful and less fussy" I have 4 kids of my own and we have MANY cousins that live near by and drop in....and run through that room! Home depot has creamy shag rugs for a couple of hundred bucks. They have other colours too.. I am open to ideas. I had one of these rugs before in a baby's room and it was soo easy to keep clean. When it had to go several years later, I just tossed it. The couch is grey (I HATE that it looks blue and I blame the orange floors) I think something more neutral would go better with the orangy floors. I am not refinishing them for quite a while. Because the grey couch is a bit of an odd grey, it is REALLY hard to find a rug to match. Most grey rugs had a taupe in them which looked awful especially with those pillows (which I currently love). Anywhoo... I looked at over 2000 rugs, if you can believe that, and now I don't love the one I have, but I know it matches perfectly. I have always wanted one room in my old farmhouse that is more sophisticated and invited adults as well as my older children to sit and read etc. ..... a bit of an escape. I love anything shiny and sparkly.... the rest of my house is a little less modern. sooo....I will take a photo when I can get someone to move that big brute of a cabinet. It'll be a few weeks. good idea as it is really hard to tell with that in there. THANK YOU HOUZZ PEOPLE

Consider getting a boot tray (Ballard sells them). Train the kids (yourselves included) to remove shoes while indoors. It will be good for their feet and for all your floors. Cheaper than buying a new rug. Have you a coat closet where the family can keep house slippers? They will soon get the hang of it. In old Japan where the floors are of woven material, shoes were never worn in the house. Is there a place for a bench where each can sit to take off shoes?

Okay, I've recently discovered the joys of baking soda. I've sprinkled it on my sofa cushions, left it for an hour, vacuumed it off, cushions much cleaner. Did the same with an unknown mucky mark on my wool rug, mark disappeared. Maybe you could try it on your rug?

Rainy morning....you're funny and sweet to politely offer this advice. We NEVER wear shoes in our house. Ever. Company never does either. This rug would be in the garbage if we wore shoes from outside. We live on a farm! We also live in Canada. I think it's an American thing to wear shoes indoors. I've never seen it happen here.

Now that I see those pics, the light rug might be the ticket. Since the present rug is giving you such trouble after spending all that money on it, maybe it belongs in your bedroom for now. If the rug you pictured is easy to keep clean, I'd say go for it. (Yes, call a teen any time you need technical assistance. They are a boon.)

What color are your walls? Are you happy with it? I have similar orangish oak floors and am looking for the right wall color. I love your artwork too!

Hi jmbro10. The walls look nicer in person than in the pics. The colour is Edgecomb Gray from BM. If I didn't have kids, this colour would be through my whole house! I love it. I have painted much of my home Revere Pewter which is next on the chip, but it's quite a bit darker. I know that colours with a hint of blue or green look nice with orangy floors (blue is opposite on the colour wheel and therefor complimentary) I have had these colours in the past with these floors and it looks great. The artwork is from Home Depot website. I think they have free returns and it came pretty quick. They have a line called...hmmm...i forget. I will think on it and get back to you. Lots to choose from and they are not expensive. You can get a nice big piece from 200-$500. This particular one is on house in a dining room and looks stunning. I still havent hung it in my room. I'm getting used to seeing it leaning on the wall and keep forgetting!

That's hilarious! Of the million colours to choose from... Id love to see a pic! My room still drives me crazy. I just don't love it at all. Im thinking of introducing some off white to calm it down

Jimbro10 did u get your walls painted?

I would definately do some soft drapes on the window behind those chairs - not heavy and don't cover any of the window glass just the trim. If you hang your art work on the other wall do a drape on the outside of each of those windows only. Angle those two chairs in slightly vs. having them straight on - you will be amazed what that small change will do. If you find that artwork is too heavy I'm sure you could find something lighter but keep the large size.
