Updating kitchen - need advice

last modified: 12 years ago
We moved into this house a year ago and have been living with this 60's style kitchen ever since. Eventually we'd like to do a major reno (maybe move the door to the dining room to give more wall space and counter) but in the meantime we're going to do some smaller updates.

We're likely going to buy an 18 inch dishwasher to put to the right of the sink and buy a small island on wheels to give us some extra counter space and storage. We've chosen Palladian Blue (Benjamin Moore) for the walls and plan on hiring someone to repaint the cabinets (in a white colour). We may also replace the current counter. I would like to replace the light fixture closest to the sink with a schoolhouse light. I'll also add some new window treatments.

My questions are:

- Should I go with brushed nickel for the cabinet hardware or black? I like the look of brushed nickel (or chrome) but the wrought iron railing and black in the floor makes me think black might look better. I'm also wondering if I should get the schoolhouse light in black or nickel.

- What colour counter? I'm thinking black or a deep grey.

On painting the kitchen cabinets ....
Maybe paint out the hinges ...if that's what they are ...
Do you have an upside down house ..
We had our dinning room upstairs ..(also we have a fab view )
Due tooo no room downstairs ...
Just a pain ..if you forget something ..
And have toooo go all the way down again ...
That part I will not miss ..once we have moved

Thanks Vintage Jazz. Good point. We will either find new hinges in the same finish as the knobs and pulls or paint over the old ones. Our house has a walk-out basement. So the kitchen and dining room are on the top/main floor, and the stairs in the kitchen lead to the basement.

Everything in a house takes time
    Before it becomes a HOME

Great kitchen, refurbish! That is giving me lots of new ideas.

Thanks! it was exhausting. I left it for last, because I knew I'd be done-for afterwards. Lived with the old, very disgusting kitchen for 2 years.

LUV LUV LUV your cat, and the view out your windows is gorgeous! What a great place you found! I like your layout fine...on mine, I thought about blowing out more walls for an open concept, but ended up keeping pretty much as is. Your kitchen looks like an ok size, depends on how large your family is, I guess. Everybody wants open concept, but costs can double, treble, when you move fixtures around. I removed only 3' of a small non-load bearing wall, between kitchen and breakfast nook, and didn't relocate any plumbing or elect. IF you're looking to maximize your dollars, maybe wait on the new counters until you finish reconfiguring. Here's the other side of the galley. It's small, but efficient.

I love your backsplash, and how bright the room is. We like our kitchen too, and have left it to the last. We've painted all of the other rooms in the house and will be replacing carpet on the main floor with hardwood in the coming weeks. Then it will time to take on the kitchen! Thanks again for the photos.

I, too, love your cat and the way she coordinates with the wonderful retro floors.

While I love black and white, I usually find black hardware on white cabinets too distracting. Silver is a more timeless choice, but gold is fun, too, and it actually is era-appropriate for a 60s house - if it happens to appeal to you. For the counter, you can hardly go wrong with white, black or gray. Keep them mostly solid. I've had both white and black counters, and they've done fine - but, they aren't shiny. If shiny, black surfaces will show dust badly, especially when the sun hits them. Hope that helps. Below is a picture of my partly-finished 1960s kitchen.
