What is the material used to make this fountain? Please also provide the source.

Since I live in an area with freezing during the wintertime, am I correct that the pump needs to be removed during the winter months?

    The stone is a basalt column that has been cut and polished on top. The pump is a submersable pump in a separate vault. Here in the northwest, our freezing temperatures are rather sporadic and not very severe, so we just leave water features like this running to prevent freezing. You can find similar pre-fab fountains like this at Stone Forest, www.stoneforest.com.
