Window treatment for sliding door

We just added vertical cellular shades to the sliding doors leading to our deck, but now I'm concerned that it's too bare- should I add a valance?

i would take away the small red mat and get an area rug under the table instead. not sure a valance will help it might date the look with the modern light fixture. will you have these mostly open? try putting some pictures on the walls around it giving the eye something else to look at. i would also take away the table cloth, add a runner if you want some fabric there. add another color to the space to complete the look with curtain panels perhaps.

I would love to add some art work, but I'm afraid it will look too busy- I painted stripes on the wall perpendicular to the doors. The table is old and the wood is stained-( also not quite my style ) that's why I covered it- but I hate the tablecloth look!

Consider painting the sliding door wall the darker beige color that is within your stripe pattern. The depth of color will eliminate the "vacant" look and then you can continue with your style in the balance of the space...change out the chairs, paint the table legs, add another material to the surface of the table (large format tile with stainless steel edge, sheet of porcelain, glass, etc).

One last comment regarding the table top. Before you adhere anything to the solid wood top of the table you will need to put a non-expanding layer on top such as 1/4" cement board.

What color would you suggest for for painting the table legs- the walls are SW Popular Gray, the stripes include that plus SW Greige, Garret Grey, and Positive Red. The adjoining kitchen has white cabinets, black appliances and Viatera quartz in Aria. As you can see in photo, the buffet is a black brown, Thank you for the great advice!

I would probably stay neutral with a metallic paint...Krylon spray. I agree with removing the table cloth and using a runner(s) as suggested above or placemats. Please remember that red, like all accent colors, needs to be well considered when introduced into a space. It is easy to over do the effect.

I would like to see the outside during the daylight hours and have privacy for the evening hours...is that your goal? So, If it is, then my suggestions is to have a nice valance over the entire sliding door and a one way pull on a traversing rod that opens in the direction of the opening of the door. Vertical blinds I never use...zi think they are too sterile.

Thank you Vicky for the input. Our actual goal with the cellular shades was to keep the hot summer sun out and the cold winter air out too. I read on Houzz that sunlight would cause white cabinets to yellow- Egads! Your idea for a valance is great, but I'm terrible at choosing fabric- any suggestions as to what I should look for?

I don't know if you will like this idea but let's give it a chance :)
If you like you can get some film for your sliding doors ,this will block some sunlight ,let light in and also give you privacy and keep the opening free of any interference.

you can also get slip covers for the chairs.... seeing the whole room, i think a valance like the one suggested above would work, match to the darker tone of the stripe.

I tried to find slipcovers for chairs with a rounded back- but can't seem to locate any, but really great suggestions!

i think if you paint the table black, why not paint the chairs black too, and do read seat cushions... or a light beige color. in the picture i love the funky old mirror frame painted black, something like that would be a good contrast for you.
