I prefer for them to blend into the wall, however, I think it really depends on the door bell itself. If you have an antique door bell you may want it to be a design feature, or if your door bell has tube chimes, again, you may want it to be a feature. That being said, for standard door bells I try to get one that can be painted to blend in with the wall so it somewhat disappears. Just my thoughts...
