@Nancy, we cut a small opening big enough to use a flash light to see what was happening behind the walls. Just as expected, there was nothing.

@Vickie. Yes, the storage is useful. The 2 pullouts have 2 sides each with adjustable shelves. We use it for a lot of large platters/dishes & decor on 1 side of 1 pull out. The left side of 1st pull out (pictured left, closest to kitchen), I use for pitchers, juicer, blender and other small appliances which are used occasionally. The 2nd pull out is used more for table linens, napkins, towels, toilet paper, other party necessities and the kids games. We are in there almost everyday.

Julie, that is a great way to save space. I am a huge fan of any home design or remodel that saves space and energy.

We also found wasted space above our basement stairs, which we will be using to add cubbies to the pantry and a new home for the microwave; I wanted a pot filling faucet over the stove so no room for one over the stove.

Is this an off the shelf pullout or did you have to have this custom-made? We just put in a second story and are using part of the under stair area for the washer and dryer, plus a doggie door exit, but have a funky area we don't know what to do with. I was thinking of a flat slide out for platters or stadium chair storage. Would live to get resources that won't break the bank!

?? The storage coming out into the stairway looks very dangerous!!! Stairs should always be kept clear to avoid serious accidents!

kgallion You might consider having a "cutout" with cabinet doors, that way you could use it for chairs or use a rolling bin(s) for storage.... You can buy cabinet doors at many different places.

This is a great storage solution especially to small-spaced homes. We did the same to our under-stair space too!
