Dog friendly furniture material

Hi we are probably one of the few that let our dogs on the couch (we have 2 a shitzu mix and a Wheaton terrier). We are looking to redecorate and not sure what fabric would be best cloth or leather worried about nails scratching the couch and chairs. Any advice? Thanks

Get analine dyed through leather and we put a sheet on ours when we don't have company because dog sweat is hard on leather, but we have 2 huge dogs who like to sit with us when we watch T.V. so that's life. They don't go on the white leather sofas in the LR so I guess I should be thankful. I do wipe the media room sofas down with just a damp cloth once a week and clean and condition about once a year other than that I just enjoy their company they are 9 and 10 and won't be here forever.

My parents allow their one dog on the leather couch. They have a very good Ethan Allen couch in leather and a throw on it for the dog and the couch is at least 15 years old and has held up nicely! Good luck and I am sure my dogs wish they could live at your house. :)

In addition to leather, some people swear by slipcovers that can be washed; some just throw a bedspread or sheet over the sofa and wash it frequently; some use sunbrella indoor/outdoor fabrics; others (like us) just match the family room sofa material to the color of our dogs' fur, vacuum frequently and have it professionally cleaned once a year (or as needed).

I have two dogs and they are also allowed on the furniture. I have a media room with a sectional and also a formal living room with two couches. In my media room, I bought a slipcovered sectional. The covers zip/ velcro on and off and when they get gross (and trust me, they do as they are off-white) I just toss them in the wash. It works and if any are ever damaged beyond repair, it's relatively easy to buy a new cover.

In my formal living room, both couches are upholstered in Perennials outdoor fabrics, which are actually very nice and don't feel like outdoor fabrics at all. The dogs spend less time in this room, but if one of them decides to take a nap while I'm not home and drools all over the place, I can wash the fabric with soap and water.

Leather is an ok option as well, but if the dogs are jumping on and off, be prepared for scratches and hopefully you like the look of well worn leather, and not super sleek and perfect leather.

We have a leather couch from Ikea.....it has held up very well to our 24mo twins, 8yo son, 2cats, and 2 dogs. Whenever someone spits up on the couch or mud from outside happens upon our couch I just wipe it clean. We also have a different leather couch from a department store and it has not held up as well to claws, but the ikea couch looks brand new despite it being 5yrs old. The only draw back is the couch is a more modern style than our house.
