More info would help. Is it a TV room, living room or a bedroom? Do you have any decor or furniture? Is that a sliding glass door with a lot of light?

I really think that as is white is a great place to start. I would not change the color of the walls. I would just add furniture and add art with color. On the sofa you could add cushions for color as well. Based on the photo I would suggest getting a licensed electrician to place an electrical outlet behind the television so as not to have that cord hanging.

The place to start is by deciding what colors appeal to you. Do you want the room to have warm colors such as yellow, orange, red or pink, or do you prefer cooler colors like greens, blues and browns? With the dark floor, you need to keep in mind that it will make the room darker, so you should go with medium to lighter shades of whatever color you choose.

I would use artwork to add color, rather than paint. White walls create such a great palette for colorful artwork and furnishings. This might not be the style you want, but it give you an idea of what color can do.

I would find a statement piece that you really like whether it be a piece of art, a vase, piece of fabric etc. Than you can build your color scheme and feel off of that. You may find that you want to go with a more neutral theme and that your current wall color works.

I really like the comments above, the advice about determining what you want and building your room and its colour scheme from that, but my first thought on seeing the picture was to paint the inset walls charcoal/black. And then I'd put three glass shelves to each side, starting a bit above the fireplace and with the bottom shelf just a few centimetres above the skirting board. And then I'd think about uplighting them with a row of lights just above the skirting board. Or spotlighting them from the ceiling. Lots of additional glass on the shelves. Glow.

All of which might not be at all what you would like ... but here goes, anyway, at least with the paint. It would take me days to do the rest on my ancient software.
