Granite Countertop: Is this a flaw?

The photo shows the brown streak on the granite countertop in our bathroom. The builder said it was OK... "it's granite". Is this an acceptable variance in granite? We are new to this and don't know if it's something worth challenging to have the whole counter replaced or not. It certainly stands out since it is on the wall opposite the door and the first thing you see. Please advise.

I can totally see why you would say something. I noticed it right away and I am sure you will ALWAYS notice it. You are paying for it and aren't 100% happy... I would definitely ask for that to be fixed!

But it is also not the end of the world!

I think it looks fine. I would move on. Once have towels and soap dish you won't notice it and it's stone. It's natural not flawed

Granite has variations and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people would like the vein and others may not. Veining and splotchy marks are part of the natural beauty of stone. Granite is not man made.

I agree that it looks fine, and will probably be much less noticeable once you have the faucets and everything else in place. As Veronica says, it's certainly not a flaw (unless it's actually physically cracked, which it doesn't appear to be), just a natural variation that is to be expected in a natural product like granite. With that said, some types of granite tend to have huge variations, and others tend to have a more predictable pattern. If you specifically selected that particular style of granite for it's predictable pattern, and specified that you did not want a piece with large variations, then it may be worth challenging if the variation bothers you.

When you buy natural products like granite, you have to realize that there are veins in them. It's where the personality comes from. I think it looks fine.

It looks like a natural characteristic of the stone, there's nothing defective or wrong with the granite. It really is quite lovely, mineral streak and all!

I was just thinking about a friend who once went shopping with me for some replacement china pieces and while I was so intent upon getting the exact hand-painted features he told me that those variances were what made such pieces so special. I agree that this mineral streak' gives your granite 'character', otherwise it would be rather monotonous. I have granite, and am also 'new to this' (my first house and I have been in it for only 3 months) and I have calmed down quite a bit about little 'quirks' that I see as further examination always reveals that the marks are 'in' the granite. Nature has a way of making individual beauty. I like the streaks. It draws the eye in a good way. For example, when you look at the streak your eye is drawn to another, smaller, then another...and I feel this is a good visual exercise even. I just ran in to look at my bathroom granite and it looks as if we might have the same granite! I have similar streaks. These variances allow you to really work with your color/décor. My first week here, I thought there was a piece of glitter stuck on my counter and upon closer examination found that there are these little gold specks throughout the granite. It is so beautiful (yet subtle) and really brightens up the area. I love it more each day. Hope yours grows on you.

I have dealt with granite for nearly 25 years and I am sure that this is not a flaw...it is the nature of granite...but for all of our clients...I personally go to the yards choose the granite my self...to ensure the patterns of the granite will work for my applications.

That's granite, not a flaw. Consider it a beauty mark!

This would be considered acceptable. It is a natural product so it is expected to have variances. In the future always ask the builder if you can pick out your actual granite slab to avoid any issues. Good luck!

If you want perfect matchy matchy you go with a man made product I sold I talian marble and granite for years and that is what makes natural stone beautiful is the variations that come with every slab and also you must have seen these when you were choosing the slab so I think if you want it replaced it will be at your expense.
