Help with kitchen backsplash

Need to decide on a backsplash for this '50s ranch kitchen remodel. A few things I'm considering:
1. We originally wanted an updated '50s feel (hence the slab doors, etc.) so I was thinking about 4x4 white tiles with an accent band 1 tile up. Thoughts?
2. We don't know how long we may stay in the house so don't want to do anything too crazy.
3. It's pretty contemporary so something that may soften it up?
4. Glass tile is out for me.
5. I did see Daltile has 4x4 white tiles and many colors to choose from for an accent liner. I like bright colors but I fear I put myself in a place where that would look strange.
6. I'm not the type of person to want what's "in style". I want this kitchen to last and not be a victim of a fad.

Any advice would help! Thanks!

I'm not a designer but, but I would think a pencil marble mosaic might give a kind of retro feel, while having a more contemporary shape. Just a thought.

Have you considered subway tiles? then on the area above the range, you can change the pattern to herringbone just to give it an added look.

White subway tile - 4 x 4 has a very dated look, while white subway tile will give it the simple look you are looking for and it is inexpensive. Good luck

I agree that 4 x 4s will look dated and inconsistent with your modern kitchen. The pencil marble mosaic would look terrific and more modern from a resale standpoint.

However, you can't go wrong with subway. But beveled subway gives a lot more interest. Home Depot has a really beautiful white marble beveled subway which is very inexpensive.

Natural stone would give your room some warmth, is modern, yet a bit retro as well.

In staying with your idea of a timeless and classic look, I would suggest using a rectangular porcelain tile in a gray tone with some movement in it. I think a thin, possibly pencil line accent in a contrasting color might be enough to light it up.

Thank you all for your comments. I think you all have talked me out of 4x4 tile. If I went with subway with an accent in a contrasting color what would that color be?

The glass/stone mosaic combos are not my favorite. I potentially like the marble idea. I also like the silver travertine and the idea of the hexagon mosaic.

I personally wouldn't recommend a contrasting color. If you want to set it off a bit around your window only take the tile up the wall to the ceiling. That would look good but the subway tile rarely needs an accent. Good luck.

I would go with much different than 4 x 4 tile I think they often look cheap I love the idea above very classy and the gray grout gives it a nice look. Or larger rectangular tile but really stay away from the 4 x 4

Also stay away from the hexagon mosaics in the space keep it SIMPLE if you want that 50's / contemporary look.

Maureen do you ever cook spaghetti or heat up sauces or tomato-based dishes? I would be interested to know how you deal with splatter on stone.

For the OP, I would look at pics on Houzz until you see somehting that appeals to you from a design perspective, then start working on color palette

I think I've settled on white subway tiles. Our countertop is Staron sanded linen which has a creamy undertone (not pink). A Tile professional suggested sandstone colored grout which complements the countertop and cabinets well. However, I see grey, pewter, platinum colors with subway tile but can't seem to find non-greys used much. Is Sandstone color grout the way to go?
