I love your room, it is very cohesive. I think it is nice that there is the pop of deep blue in the ottoman, and it looks like in the curtains. Maybe try some patterned pillows with that same blue in them, that may give you the "break" you are looking for.

Just changing out your pillows with accent colours or patterns will make a huge difference.

Wow there are so many great comments here! This is why I love Houzz. Thank you to all of you who took the time to make suggestions. To clarify some things both the ottoman and the back of the built in shelves are navy. They curtains are a grey/black combo. There are definitely a lot of directions that were suggested. I will try to de-clutter the shelves. I will definitely return the two pillows I recently purchased. I know I was trying to go with "color" but I do like the idea of just doing several cream/ivory pillows. I don't have any place for art so it's hard to really incorporate that into the space and pull from those colors. Lot to think about.....

replacing the navy behind the built ins with something metallic and reflective and bringing some black into the space will create some tension and liven it up without adding more color and then just add more textures in the same beige palette until you are done with beige

I am currently overseeing the construction of a new home and hope to be in by Christmas. I also love the serene capsule of color using cream, tan and taupe in my decorating. (In the past I always had to think of resale as the family with transfers moved about every four or five years and so I tried to put the color into the rugs and furniture I took with me. That way I hoped the prospective buyers would not be overwhelmed with a strong colors in the tiles, appliances or cabinetry.) This approach worked relatively well and sales were timely.

Now that I am hopefully "in place," I still gravitate toward the timeless classics of furnishing trying to stay up-to-date, but not falling for the "right now" popular color or pattern--or use it in less expensive items like a throw or pillow.

Having said all that, my current splashes of color include
sage/moss green and red. These add interest but not falling into the trap of, "Oh, that is so last season." I try to have a flow of those colors throughout the house, mildly emphasizing one or another as then I can move furniture from one area to another and it still "goes," as with those multiple moves. For example, a writing table has been in a foyer, a bedroom and now a sunroom. Two matching chairs have been in a living room, a family room, a bedroom, and now back in a living room.

Too, I am reluctant to have bold print, but try to use texture and coordinating fabrics to bring about a coordinated look.

Sorry to be so wordy. Bottom line, color preferences are so personal, so just follow your heart!

Dear Halina1110, please don't use anything in orange. Light blues or greens but please no orange. My hubby likes beige also but I use color in the area rugs and follow colors I picked out of my Thomas Kinkade paintings. Pulls it all together. Best of luck.

Although I have a degree in Interior Design I haven't worked in the field other than a small job here and there for the past ten years. While there are are a lot of good comments and good intentions, I don't think the posted photos give the correct perspective and color to give a completely accurate picture of the space. It seems that suggestions run the gamut and almost want to redo the room rather than some easy. Sometimes the correct change is merely taking away a few items and re-evaluating. House reorganizers will often empty a room, look thru out the home and re purpose items into another space. Also you might want to start a few Pinterest boards. You could base them on colors, or walls or anything. You can build a wish book much like what you have on Houzz. I always say, the more the merrier.

I love your room. Just replace 2 or 3 of the plain beige throw pillows with ones that have a mixture of beige & the blue of your ottoman in a Kilim, Ikat or Persian patterns. You will love it all over.

Personally, I am a DIY, and I would NOT replace any of your throw pillows whatsoever. It gets too expensive. Instead, I would see if you have something small and easy to carry in the blue of the ottoman and I would go to a fabric store and get some tassels/edging with that color in it and blind baste it on some of the pillows (using a couple of colors or different ones for each pillow that you do). I would get a throw rug with some of the "color" in it and perhaps a lamp. I think your beige is lovely. Decorate for your happiness NOT what everyone else thinks.

All good ideas and what is great about neutrals and solid upholstery anything can accessorize with,also slip pillows into new cases seasonal changes. Possible.

Helina, it was nice to finally get your feedback from all these suggestions. Your ottoman is gorgeous and it would be nice to add that color somewhere in the room to tie it all together. I think a couple of patterned cushions with the rich navy and beige would look awesome in your space. Your living room is very well put together and whatever you choose to do with the cushions will work.

I used to do everything in beige but got tired. Now I add lots of color. More vibrant and fun.

Slip covers in bright colors for those pillows. You can change them for the seasons.

I too adore the idea of blues, wondered if you had considered teal. This will really 'pop' the life back into your furnishings, and is bright and vibrant year round. Consider stepping away from wooden tables and see if glass will add some more space into the room, artwork will also definately help, with this style I'd lean towards blues and gold. I think your room looks great. You started incorporating color with your ottoman and curtains. A few colorful pillows and you'll pump up the color on your already beautiful canvas. Could you tell me where you got the mirror over your couch and trunks. It's beautiful. I've been looking for a mirror just like that.

My sister always has white walls and then browns, creams and blacks. Color comes from some large green plants. It always looks good to me...........

A black cushion right in the middle of the couch there to tie in the black from the bookcase or a textured black throw on the back of the couch.

Firstly your home is beautiful, the only thing I would suggest is to replace all your cushions with light blue and cream. They will brighten your home and give it a whole new feel.

I feel bad adding yet another blurb to this conversation, but I really like Michelle Harding's idea of light blue and cream pillows... Maybe a pale robin's egg kind of blue. So many wonderful options on Etsy. West Elm, too.

Keep in mind that you just need the covers. If you can sew, it's easy (and cheap!) to make up covers that you can change out throughout the year. And, covers fold nice & flat, so they're easy to store!

I moved into a newly built home a few years ago - It was essentially - you guessed it a beige box - including the carpet. While it would not have been my choice it turns out to be a very versatile backdrop for almost any colour scheme. I have successfully used the following colour combos in different rooms.

Copper, turquoise and black and cream , with yellow accents in the kitchen living, dining - with mid century styling.

The bedrooms are accented with cherry red, cream and black in an asian style.
Spare room/ study is Pumpkin orange and apple green and the master has two schemes - winter -lavender and mustard / gold and - cape cod duck egg, cream and white shutters. I have tiled bathrooms that are also beige with chocolate coloured floors - they are accented with apple green and the ensuite - mustard.

All look pleasing to the eye and work well with the beige -this can't be said about many colors. My advice would be to break out with some new cushions and build from there or buy an art work that you love and let this dictate your colors. You may be able to get the cushions/ pillows on approval and return those you aren't happy with. Patterns and prints also add another element to your design.
You can always use coloured pieces of clothing in a room to test the effect. Take your time to get it right - looking is half the fun!

If you really love your beige - it can work as long as you layer the room with different shades and most importantly textures. It is nice to have at least one surprise whimsical piece in your room - I have a 40cm shocking pink resin sheep in my room - it makes me smile - then I don't see the beige!

Lovely room. Start small and experiment. Colorful books for your ottoman coffee table. An inexpensive colorful throw for chairs or sofa. Bring in seasonal flowers, bright coasters. That way you will see what colors you like without making costly mistakes.

How do you want the room to feel when you are finished? Calm, serene, lively, classic? This will help you chose colors that suit you. There is no right or wrong answer. What do you want? Your room is lovely.

I love neutrals on walls, sofa, chairs, anything that takes a fair amount of money to change. Pillows. throws, candles, ornaments and yes even painted furniture is another story and will put sparkle in a neutral room. Most any color will go with neutrals, Go to a paint store get some paint swatches and just try the swatch against your sofa or wall and see what hits your fancy. If you can sew a straight line you can make your own pillows. Don't go crazy on patterns, Pillows are one thing I change on a whim. The possibilities are endless and if ever it becomes too much you can always go switch back to what you had before. Good luck.

It's too bad that beige get's such a bad rap. Every house needs something that will offer a feeling of continuity to eliminate that hodge podge. There's a fine line in being able to achieve an eclectic decor without looking like a resale shop. That being said beige throughout offers a nice background, touches of black throughout does the same thing. The loveliest homes I've ever been in have started with beige then added a color accent with the adjoining room having another color that blends with that. A flow will begin to appear. I'd look at adjoining rooms for tips on a color you already like and maybe, just maybe, you have too much texture going on which keeps your eye too busy jumping around. Personally I think you just need a little fine tuning.

Try painting a wall (or the whole room) a nice chocolate brown. It will anchor all of that beige and provide contrast, but in the same color family.

I agree with adding colors with accessories; pillows, vases, candles, etc. work wonders to give a pop of color to a room.

I put Tuscan mural on one wall and everyone thinks it is stunning. I would be happy to submit a photo if you are interested.

Thanks again for the additional comments. Although I know the impact paint can have, I'm not interested in painting the room. It already tends to get dark in here because of the position of the windows. I don't have any place for art work so that's not an option either. I tried working with some of the light blue pillows I already had stored in my closet. Not sure if I like it. And I took some things out of the shelves.

I love your most recent pictures, halina1110. You have the colored ottoman, a beautiful color in the back of your bookcases, and a pretty pattern in your drapes. Love the pattern on the throw pillow as well. The potted purple hydrangeas are beautiful too. If you replaced anything you have now with anything of color, it would mess up the flow, IMO. I really love your room......looks inviting and well put together. I wouldn't change a thing (until you are ready for a massive change, like different wall color and furniture).

I would go with natural, glowing colors that go with the beige and the drapes and footrest, for instance, Some of the objects in the shelves are green or a nice rich brown. You could incorporate those colors, as well. I think it is good to stick to a limited palate though, as you already have a lot of textural difference, which means you do not need a great deal more to complete your look, as the textures are really great already. You could go get some paint sample colors that you like for the pillows and carry them around in your purse so when you are shopping, you get the right color range!

Get some pillows and accessories in the colour of the ottoman. Use black with it to ground the room. And put a pink bow on the dog!

Add color through your pillows and accessories. Find a color you like and repeat it throughout your room. You can pop teal, red, or orange. Any of these colors would brighten up your space.
