Century Home: To Sand or to remove paint splatters?

This is our first used home and BOY is it used! It's about 100 years old. The wood is unique and original inside & we have no intentions of replacing, but lazy previous owners have paint splatters, nail holes, chips, etc. Belt Sanding would be a HUGE job... is there any quicker way other than Murphy's oil and Goo Gone to get the paint off stairwells and door frames and wainscoting without ruining the wood, or is it not worth the time until we can just do it with a belt sander? Or do we just stain the wood without any prep work, which doesn't seem right to me... Want to do it right, but want to do it ourselves. Thanks!
