Does hardware need to match?

I want to get new hardware for my 1927 home: door hardware (indoor & out) and switchplates. I want to keep the character of my old yet updated home, so I don't want anything too modern. I'm thinking either antique brass or dark oil rubbed bronze. But my question is, does this hardware need to match throughout the house? Does it need to match my kitchen cabinet and bathroom hardware?

The closer all the hardware is to the same type, the more cohesive your house will look. Oil rubbed bronze will look great. We changed it it, and absolutely love it.
