Give me your advice on this family room please!

Because we are putting an addition on the house, we will have plenty of space for a family room, which will permit me to turn this into my home office. I truly do work from home and have an assistant that works with me daily. I don't want to touch the limestone wall or mess with the slate floor or even paint the brick. However, I do want to update this look. What do you think I should do with the wood walls?

Nice large space for a home office. How nice to have a fireplace and natural light! There certainly are a lot of patterns going on here. My suggestion for the wall would be to go towards something more neutral. Perhaps you could reclaim the wood for another project in your addition.

Also a nice natual rug to add some warmth and interest.

Good luck with this! This room is full of potential :-)

Here's a pretty office space with a fireplace. Looks like you could really add a substantial desk since the room is so big

I actually like the walls - they're kind of quirky. I'd probably get a couple of large pieces of art to cover part of the wood and give the room a lighter feel, and I'd probably get a large corkboard or memo board to hang over my desk where I can corral my sticky notes.

Great space for an office. I would paint the paneling on the walls to lighten up the space. Have fun!

I'm presuming that the slate you like is that right in front of the fireplace? Because I'd suggest leaving that and (gasp) carpeting the rest in a pleasant grey carpet. it would remove some of the pattern overload, make the most of the limestone wall (from which you should pick the shade of grey), and wam up the room physically. Then you can paint the wood panelling (or remove it, as suggested above, and drywall first) and lighten the beams, and you'll have a whole new world!

The room has six patterns, counting the ceiling. I'd pick the three I liked most and cover the others with drywall, upholstered walls, carpet, or paint. A pro could tell you if the parquet floors can be refinished in a lighter shade, perhaps slightly gray to coordinate better with teh fireplace stone wall. Then get the fireplace ready for use, either a gas log set or even one of those flashy glass "sand" things, depending on your taste.

Apple Pie - I think the floors are slate, so can't be refinished. I think it comes down to the wood walls and bricks needing to change.

Oh, I thought the floors next to the slate around the fireplace were wood parquet. If they are slate, too, that's another kettle of fish, and then I agree with you about what needs to change.

There are a lot of different materials in this space. I would try to eliminate or hide a few of those materials. You can use a large area rug for the floor. This will also help anchor and group together your office furniture. The ceiling beams would look great if they matched the wood finish on the fireplace mantel and window trims. You said that you wanted to keep the brick but I would consider painting it to coordinate with the limestone. (solid neutral color) The wood paneling on the wall feels overwhelming for this room. It would be best to remove the wood and have dry wall. You could even have the dry wall painted a color. This will give the office a visual break from the other natural materials. Good luck!

They are wood parquet floors. I was thinking carpet for sure, but this opens up to the attached garage. My husband thinks it would be awful to carpet this space. I think it would be fantastic. The slate is just around the fireplace.

A length of 12 foot wide wall to wall carpet can have its edges bound and be loose laid on a pad. Easy to send out for cleaning.

The fireplace is empty right now. Only a gas line is in there. Not sure what to do with that either. I know I do not want it to be a natural wood burning fireplace. LOVE the beautiful fireplace in the picture above. I guess I will have to visit a fireplace shop.

i like the idea of lightening the parquet floors in a shade of gray topped with a large carpet. a wall of bookshelves that go to the height of the brick, that would sit in front of the brick would make them disappear and give plenty of storage space. above the bookshelves, you could add some large art with a feminine touch for balance. i would also add floor to ceiling curtains and if i was buying furniture, i would probably stick with white. i really love the room. enjoy it
