Ok I suggest you wait till you get them then rethink colors based on the image above. The crappy thing about color and monitors is what you see is not always what it looks like when it's on the wall or in your light or against your other items. Zaz knows that only to well :)

How crazy! I love the room and I love the pillow but I don't like the two together! Ha ha. I thought it would look good tying the orange nook in with the living room.

True that. When they come in I will let you know. Tomorrow I will start looking for fabric and a more neutral rug for the nook. Going to take down the cornices and try to figure out how to do a roman shade/drape!

Hi, i was just reading up on this thread, thought i'd get in on the action. The idea of merely changing a paint color seems too harsh to me. I'd like to suggest a couple of ideas for your kitchen wall, something Italian that your hubby would like. It seems to me that when he suggested "orange," he probably meant terra cotta. These samples are both Italian wallpaper...

Thank you for the wallpaper suggestions. The colors in these are nice. I wasn't so sure of "Italian orange, red and the such! I am learning so much in so little time. I appreciate your perspective and interjection! Please tell me more! Good night ladies....chat more tomorrow.

I think if that last pillow works it's just a matter of lightening and softening the orange. Then a solid green on the drapes.

ok just start by taking the pink lamps out. take the rug from the dining room and put it in the living room. put the two, black chairs on either side of the coffee table. so far we haven't spent a dime lol. the orange is great! i say keep it. mount the two speakers and tv to the wall between the window. they make cord cover that you paint to match the wall color. that would be a great start.

I put together a color palette for you based on your existing materials (carpet, tile, furniture, etc.), and love of earthy hues. I did a quick search on etsy and found a pillow that has most of the colors I recommend for your space. The color charts to check are all Ben Moore--- All the colors listed are on 5 color charts---shown in photo.
Kitchen walls-Brushed Aluminum, Ashen Tan, or Coastal Fog.
Eat-in area of kitchen: Hillsborough Beige or Bar Harbor Beige.
Brown wall in living room: Brandon Beige, Raccoon Hollow, Cabot Trail, Rustic Taupe, Herbal Escape, or Sage Mountain.
The cream color you currently have, may work with these colors---if not, then Berber White is an alternative. The brown at the top of the stairs looks fine. Hope this is helpful... I'm off and running. Will stop by later. CheerS!

Ok. In the last couple of days my husband has added a new twist to my livingroom/kitchen nook make over. I have attached a picture of our newest addition. Should I repaint it black and add new handles or is there a way of merging modern and traditional??? I changed out the rug like Flairlighting says and added colorful pillows for now. What are your thoughts?

Why not paint that one wall w/stripes using both colors?

Lisa..the weights, styles and balances are so far off and that just compounded the problem. Don't paint it black it will look like another huge black hole in space in that room. The black you already have is causing issues with the orange and brown. If anything paint the glass and wood tables white to match the dining area.

Turn the rug so the long part is in front of the couch and more importantly, move the sofa about 3 feet closer to the TV.

Move the keyboard stand to the other side of the couch. This way when you look in from the front door you see the nicer end table. If you MUST keep that desk move it down toward the door. Put one black chair on each side of the sofa forming a "U".

If you can convince him to move the desk out of that area altogether get a sofa table for in back of the couch again in the white of the dining area set.

You really need a better media setup too. Mount the TV on the wall and get a large media set up that you can put your speakers in.

Because this is a large room with a high ceiling use large decorations no small ones. Really big lamps, vases, bowls and whatnots.. That goes for the artwork on the wall too. The smaller mirrors by the TV don't work well. It's a beautiful space and it could be awesome with a few changes and additions.

All this is moot though you need to solve the color issue. If you want to stay with the orange then lighten the brown several shades.

Knowing the rest of the livingroom is off white and the hallways and stairs give me a paint suggestion to repaint the brown wall entirely...

my husband rebuilds ecig's and refuses to have a workshop in the garage. The stuff that was cluttering the nook was his stuff. The desk was his solution to hiding his tools and such. Sooo at a loss.

We bought a TV mount for the tv and I am looking for lamps over the next couple of days. The tall lamp and small lamp can go. I am looking for new end tables. The chairs, desk and couch are staying. I will change the color of the brown wall to ANY color and change the rug.

Yes. I guess. My husband said he doesn't care if I change it so I can. I just feel bad cuz the color brings him so much joy. I will think on changing it through out today and see how I feel.

Can he return that desk and get an Armoire? Seems this would suit his needs better and could be worked into this room.

Lisa you need to resolve your style, balance and colors. I would hate to see you add more stuff to these areas without knowing what you were after. To do that you need a plan and to know what colors you are working off of.

You need to concern yourself with the weights of the items in the rooms with the things that are staying so you know what you can properly add.

Your hard permanent colors right now are the beige, green, orange and brown with the oak and tile too.

You have also added the sofa in grey, the breakfast room furniture in white, the chairs are black and the drapes are off white. It's a lot to work off of and you need to do it artistically. Looking at your large unchangeable choices there isn't one thing wrong it's just not all playing nicely together. Yes it would be nice if the brown was a bit lighter so the black items would not get swallowed. The real issue here is the orange is so bold and overpowering it needs to be taken down a notch. What if you put the orange wall neutral then concentrated on adding the orange in the hall and all 3 rooms with paintings, window treatments and accessories?

How about a wall stencil in a lighter shade of orange on the brown corner wall? Go with the celestial theme to match your stars.

The rug was for scaling to give you an idea, and also help you group the furniture. Turn it with the couch long way. BTW you are doing a great job!! what about white chalk paint on the role top...only problem is if you paint the roll top, it may crack and chip when open and closing, so instead lets find it a new place to live. I love your pillows, and I like the rug with the couch! just turn it.

The dining nook looks great with that rug. that room can be almost finished!

ok dont kill me! but what if we put the desk where the TV is now and the TV where the desk is now floated the couch with its back to the nook put a chair on either side, one chair could be turned and used at the desk. Wall mount the tv. and then regroup the mirrors where they are now/

OK! So after all your hard work we have decided to paint over the orange and the brown! We both like the Heather Lane Light Mocha. I absolutely love the grays Natalie but we think we are going to go with the warmer color. We also have decided to move the desk as Flair has said to the other wall and mount the tv to the wall where the desk is now. Now before I spend another dime (other than on new paint) I am not sure that I am even going to go with any orange in my house at all. We both were going for a more modern look with our leather couch and black leather chairs but since the addition of the desk we have decided to go with a more traditional feel for the living room. Having said that I love some of the colors and patterns that Natalie has posted with the blues and the greens and such. I will be moving the rug the opposite way for now but I am definitely going to purchase a new rug perhaps an oriental or some other rug in more earthy colors. I am purchasing a new sofa and new end tables but will switch them around as suggested. Not sure yet what I will do for a new tv stand but at least the tv will be mounted. I also am on the hunt for some bigger lamps and artwork as Lucidos suggested. This has been quite an ordeal and it all goes back to the colors on the walls-lol. I found some drapes that I purchased to use as a new cover for my cornices but they are in a honey color which will now not go with the new paint color. I just ordered a sectional for the living room but I think I will cancel it and purchase a sofa instead and possible love seat. I just need to find something that has recliners in it for Sal and I because we enjoy that. So now this is a blank slate open to any new ideas. I know this project has probably driven you all crazy but no suggestion was taken lightly and I am completely appreciative of the time and effort you all have provided me. So with a sigh of relief that we are changing the paint color lets start over ya'll!

Great. yes pick your color palette then get it on the wall and then so many things if the slate is clean that you can do...Oh and measure the living room area if you will I'll post some floor plans. This way you will get a sense between the sofas and a sectional and an idea of the size of these.
