The hood you choose will have specs that give lowest and highest placement for the hood to work properly. Different hoods have different strengths and different measurement specs. Often (not always) 36" is the maximum.

You should also look at the recommendation for your range or cooktop. There is usually a minimum distance stated. So your hood recommendations and the distance above cooking area should match. If it doesn't, the hood doesn't work with your stove.
