Cabin needs a new exterior

Just bought a cabin in northern Wisconsin. It's very "cabiny"inside...cedar walls, slate floors etc. but the outside needs help. Considering split logs on the outside and/or cedar shakes but heard they can be expensive and high maintenance. The back needs some sort of architectural interest. What would you do?
