Calling all designers!

"Can you help me?" said the living room. "I could be so attractive but I don't know what color (fabric or leather) my yellow chairs should be upholstered in. Or what color paint on my walls. Or how I should rebuild my mantel and what I should put on it. What should I do in my window area. Thanks for helping with my makeover!"
Sincerely,
Desperate Digs

My only issue with the linen wall paper is that it will read almost the same as the paint you now have, so I see that as an expensive buck, for a very small bang. For my money (which thankfully it isn't) The fireplace is the most important thing here for "changing" - I like CDRs pillow choices very much, but would prefer either all the greens, or all the oranges but not mixed. Maybe if you added one or the other, you'd get a better feel on having a ottoman vs. a wood table?

I agree. The furniture arrangement was the most important. You have taken care of that basic arrangement.

Next is the fireplace. You could put off the sconces if you had a really impactful piece of art or mirror. It doesn't need to be expensive.

Yes, my pillow intention was one or the other. I like the green for something different. The pillows are all available at Pier One....something easy to pick up.

If you got the fireplace and pillows in place, I think the coffee table is acceptable for now.

I added a BM paint color to the moss pillows above to show you how it could work in the room. BM herbal escape. It is very gray, but has some green tint.

You certainly could go even more gray with the paint.

I;ll bet you have some art in the house you could use above the fireplace......maybe something that could be reframed.

I see creamy warm white or even palest hint of peach walls, with peach and green accents, beautiful gold tall gilted mirror, and new sconces in your beautiful room! Two chairs either floral or striped fabric. Maybe two new prints and placed on same wall but one atop of the other. Rug would go nicely with this plan too. Couple of new satiny pillows and that would be all you need. Lovely view.

I am in late but I think your room has great bones and it appears like your taste runs toward traditional, which is easily updated. If the sofa fits in front of the window I would put it there with the wooden armchair next to it. I would then place two wing chairs on one side of FP and then get a love seat opposite. This will increase your seating as well as add a warm feeling. The seating all needs to talk to each other. There should be enough room to walk through although not exactly in a straight line.
Sconces do need changing, any style will do that you like. They do not have to match other lighting in the adjacent rooms.
The walls can be any color from the rug, just lighten it a few shades so it won't be dark. The grass cloth will show every seam because it does not match and will fade quickly which makes moving art around a chore.
Panels at the sides of the window a darker shade of the wall color will add depth and warmth. Do not use the same fabric for pillows.
I think that the rug choice must come first in this room since everything in regards to color will play off of it.
Fabrics should harmonize in color, pattern, and texture but not match.
I hope this helps. Enjoy the process.

I was thinking.....since you are having a holiday party, I think you could use what you have now on the mantle and add holiday items.

Hang the mirror (it might look better vertically), Hang a simple wreath over it or place a collection of nutcrackers or whatever you have holiday-decor-wise.

The second photo is an example of what you could do, using a coupe of framed pieces of art. Replace the vases with holiday pieces.

After the holidays, you can re-address the mantle.

Ok so (bad idea I know) I went into Ethan Allen where a lot of my furniture pieces in home are from and asked a designer there their thoughts on my room. Comment was that the Wing chair fabric was wrong on the style of chair and that a white tufted sofa is formal and there is no getting around that. Room needs to look more formal not try to make it casual r get rid of the sofa. Thoughts from here?
Oh was reading back the various comments and I think there was some confusion. I am hosting a 50th wedding anniversary at my home with about 75 people. Thus the tone of immediacy (and anxiety?) in my comments. I need to have lighting in the room ASAP but don't want to purchase just anything. At this point I would be lucky to find something that I could have in hand quickly. So...things I need immediately are a lamp, 2 better looki g sconces for over fireplace that will make room look more modern along with mirror. The rest? I'm hoping all the people will block out everything. ;).
Your room at this point is pretty traditional so I think the EA rep was right on that. I don't think the wing chair fabric is that out of whack though that it doesn't fit. Here is an inexpensive lamp that might work for now and maybe later.

The wall color is a little peachy, I would go for more of a ice coffee color. Martha Stewart has great options. Mount the mirror, maybe even paint the mirror? Antique it a little? And do the chairs like a rustic leather. Look at restoration hardware for ideas

You might have time to paint the mirror gold or silver. If you can, i would find a few small tables and nice gold based lamps, or silver, whichever way you go on mirror. New sconces a must. Buy a few satiny pillows with peach, browns , rust, or steel blue....you need to hone in on what colors you will pull from carpet. You need something interesting on your mantle... something seasonal? Then you're good to go. Leave new chairs for later when you have time.

Hi. I don't know the lady at Ethan Allen and what I am going to say might should obvious, but the job of furniture store sales people is to sell furniture.

I encourage people to keep what they have if it works for them. I see nothing wrong with the fabric on the wing chairs. Tufted sofas can go with any decor. Rules of the past can be broken, if you know how to do it. Trust your gut. You have a traditional home but you want it updated and you know what you want. You may not be able to do it in phase one, but you will get there.

The Cherry Hills is a look you liked, but not the color. I would call this transitional-traditional. (traditional, but updated). Also, I am including 3 chesterfield sofas in rooms that are not totally traditional to show you they work. I even through in one that borders on modern.

Try taking down your art. Place one from the left side and one from the right side on the mantle, overlapping.

On the sides, where the art was, you can add large starburst mirrors.

Thank you everyone! My mantel is only a little over 4" in depth so it's challenging to find things that will fit on it. What about either of these sconces?
  • PRO
I like the one on the left, but it depends on its size and the size of the mantle. I think you need something that is narrower and perhaps taller than your current sconce.

Can you tell us the height and width of the current sconces?/height and width of those 2 above?

Your fireplace tile appears to be more pewter in color. That is okay, as long as you bring both the pewter of the fp and the more gold of the sconces into other areas of the room.
They are taller than what I currently have and based on the dimensions I believe they will look as though they are hanging lower than the current ones which are hung too high. I am thinking of just keeping the room furniture and just making the entire room be taupe and ivory colors. So I am going to change out the rug to a more contemporary yet simple style that has taupe with aperhaps a little bit if ivory in it ( example: taupe background with ivory etched small diamond pattern) or something lie that. The pictures on the wall are abstract art. I don't like them. :)

I am going to guess the socket opening is in the center of the light new fixture. If that is so, I think they will look fantastic. To reassure yourself. you can tape off with painters tape the outline where they will sit.

Your new mirror should be rectangular. I round piece will fight the sconces.

Please post a pic of the new rug. Either of the sconces you picked will look great. I agree with CDR's suggestion to place art above your fireplace. I would move the mirror to the wall behind the wing chairs or hang it vertically on the wall to the left of the window.
Also, I would get accent pillows for the sofa in the color of the wing chair pattern (brown, tan?). BTW - Is the upholstery on the yellow chairs in good condition? If so, you can still use them if you replace the rug.

I agree that the yellow chairs would look fabulous by the windows, if you replace the rug.....a "color-block" in an other-wise neutral room would be unexpected
  • 11 years ago
Replacing the rug with something more neutral and geometric sure opens up a more modern approach.

Party is 2 days after thanksgiving. I think the yellow on chairs is too bright. Stores I like arecethan Allen, arhaus but can be too rustic and over scaled sometimes. I like American traditions in NH. I like some of the pieces from horchow.

You have much advice on here. I will just add a few of my own. :)

First of all, I really love your wall color. It is a nice neutral which will allow you to go with almost any color.

With color; decide if you want to go more Cool or Warm. Then decide what colors you gravitate towards. I tend to love all shades of green, and love them in chairs. If you do not want that color, I would go with the color in your rug which looks like "brick". Not too red, but darker than salmon.

Your windows are just stunning, so I wouldn't go with drapes I don't think. Perhaps some interesting shades that you can completely roll up in the day, to get the light, roll down in the evening that will give a formal appearance.

Have some throw pillows bring out touches of colors and patterns without being over done. Enjoy!

I would go with a darker color on your fireplace. Perhaps even two-tone, or try pebble tiles inside:

Jodifina, the pillows you posted are nice. But, you really need to choose your rug first. I think the one lessimore posted would work well with the sconces and chairs.

You won't be sitting in the ottoman, so......

Here are a couple of ottomans from overstock. No, not the quality you'd get at Ethan Allen, but they will ship right away. I think, for your party, they are going to be much more of a statement than what you have now. If you are not satisfied with the quality, put them in another room after the party and search for the ottoman you really want.

I love the subtle repetition of the diamond pattern,( similar, yet all different) in wing chairs (not shown in lessimore photoshop above), rug, ottoman, sconces.

I would suggest you take down your current artwork. I find a lot of people have a hard time imagining possibilities when the old stuff is still on the walls.
