Exterior doors should swing inward!

A pic of the wall w the door would help. Your idea sounds practical, but is this a main entry? Having people come and go right where you cook might be a problem regardless of direction of the swing. You may want to switch direction AND move the stove.

You can move the door to the other side. Are you planning on re-finishing the door and cabinets? Reclaimed wood and distressed cabinets are the "in," thing right now. have you ripped up the flooring to see what's under there? Sometimes in older homes they have covered wood flooring that can be redone as well. Looks like you have your work cut out for you! Good Luck on this project! would love to see after pictures!

You should move it as far down the same wall as you can, to the left and switch the direction it opens. It would open from right to left, inwards of course, and you would not be as close to the stove as you exited to the room. This is assuming that when you open the door all the way, it would open against a wall with nothing in the way.
