How are those treads supported?

We are building a townhouse. We have cut down a large cherry tree, And are considering making treads out of the cherry tree. But we don't really know how to go about the rest of it.

    Behind the wood portion of the railing is a steel wide-flange beam that is supporting the treads. the steel rods vertically connecting to the treads are actually supporting them treads from that beam. Here's another photo
