Living Room Layout HELP Please.

I have 3 teenagers and a preteen and I need as much seating as possible. I want to get a sectional, but I am having real trouble deciding on a layout and where to put the tv. My room is 20x20, with fireplace at one end, and both front and back door in view. I have plenty of furniture and am willing to get rid of or buy more. Please help!

Pix are pretty dark. Is that a dining area in the corner by the tall corner cabinet? I assume the TV is in the dark cabinet left of the white bookcase. What activities go on here - TV, video, piano, family table games??? You have a lot of furniture and clutter so a sectional sofa would simplify a lot. Try to photo in better light at dusk when the outside light doesn't make the interior so dark - turn on all the lights.

I think this room is totally doable, but I agree with imdb: you have too much stuff. It makes the space feel chaotic.

I think the layout you have looks good with the exception of the odd white chair, and I would put the TV on the console between the two sofas. I would also replace those two humongous chairs. They're too big for the space and close off the seating area.

At a quick glance it looks as if placing a TV screen next to the FP could work. Removing the bookcase and replacing it with a cabinet that would house the TV, components, and other media could become a clean focal point for the room. By facing the surround of the Fire Place with the same material used for the cabinet (wood planking for a rustic/modern look) or stained hardwood for something more Traditional, you'd be making a statement and calling attention where you want it. Then, if you like a sectional, back the sectional to the sliding doors in the location you now have a sofa. The sectional would then run along the wall where you now have a long table. Then a pair of chairs (swivels...? recliners...?) where your leather sofa is now.

I decluttered. I added light. If you want recliners, check out West Elm's Sedgwick. Or even LaZboy has some smaller recliners now. You need a place for every seat to set a drink, but you don't need seven places for every seat. End tables OR coffee table; you don't need both.

Use light pillows on dark sofas, dark pillows on light sofas.

@Jeffrey Brooks Interior Design, what fireplace? Am I blind? Or is the room so cluttered, I didn't see an obvious fireplace?

I thought that was a TV cabinet, not a FP! Agree that removal of the clutter is primo on the to do list. With teens, the leather sofa could probably stay and add some chairs that are made of other indestructible materials.

Consider 2 stools by the fireplace in lieu of the white chair. These could be easily moved around the room for additional seating or topped with a tray for a coffee table.

Shelves can be tricky! Fine line between cohesive and cluttered. Might be worthwhile to bring in a pro with no ties to your "stuff". Meanwhile, here's some ideas to get you thinking.

If that's a fireplace, that changes everything. I'd flip all the furniture and put the TV on the shelves to the right.

Thanks to everyone. Yes, this room is very cluttered. It is partly the way we live and partly because I moved everything just before I took the photo. I did consult a pro, who told me to put the table against the end wall and the back of my couch to the door. We have previously not had a tv in this room (we have a smaller tv room past the corner cabinet, connected to our dining area and kitchen), but the kids are all bigger and with friends, we need more space. There is a piano, which can't go anywhere else. And that is a fireplace. I will keep working and try better pics later.
