Since it isn't a large space a lighter color floor would work well plus it will show less dust than a dark floor. There is a current trend away from yellow undertones. You might consider a Scandinavian look like whitewash. Your floor will be beautiful refinished whatever you choose.

I agree. White wash or Pickled oak from Minwax will look great. Your pro can also mix powder dye with water. It will take 1/2 a teaspoon to make 16oz. The dye emphasizes the grain and covers discrepancies better.

A light colour is prefered for the space...unless their are water/urine stains present. A lighter treatment may not hide the stains very well (I would ask someone like Oak & Broad to speak to that). When water/urine stains are present a mid-tone stain works very, very well. Move away from the orange/yellow tones and move towards the fawn/caramel/brown colours (with gray undertones) to modernize the space AND to hide stains. This has beed done many times on Houzz and the effects are always impressive.

Please stay away frm Minwax unless your professional hardwood floor refinisher is very happy with it. Minwax is often considered a DIY level finish not a professional finish (you don't want to pay hoards of money for less than professional product).
