Has anyone bought the Allerton dining table and chairs by Horchow?

I am wondering how the quality is of this set. Are the chairs comfortable to sit in?

Thank you so much for answering. If you don't mind, are the chairs also really 23" wide? I am so confused as to why they specify 28" for the depth when it is only 19"! Goes to show what happens when its made in china. I appreciate your time.
Makangirl, The seat width is 23" wide but if you measure from the back(top part) of the chair is around 20" and depending how you measured the bottom part of the back of the chair (semicircle), can go to 26" from one side to the other side of the chair(wood part).

Would love to know how you got the set 40% off. :)
Also, the side board seems sold out. What piece would you suggest to use to store china that could go under a window?
    Thanks.
It was an anniversary sale. Check Ambella Manhattan Console from Horchow. I don't know if is too tall to go under a window but you can check it out (it is 65" W x 19" D x 40" T) information from a Horchow brochure.

Purchased the dining set last year just before Christmas and have been very happy with it. We fit two extra chairs in for Christmas dinner comfortably - so 3 on each side and 2 at the end. The table comes with a leaf (the picture includes the leaf). The top of the table has a beautiful high end finish and the design looks great with or without the leaf.

I am considering buying the set for a client. How is the quality of the set? Does it feel sturdy or on the flimsy side? Thanks.

I think the quality is excellent for price. The seats are wide and sturdy, the table is well made and the extension leaf works well. Everything comes assembled and I used the white glove service and they took great care with the delivery and got all the boxes out of the house as well.

@maybemaui - Your dining room looks fabulous! We are glad to hear you're pleased with the dining collection.

Can anyone comment on the quality of the wood? Is it real wood or a veneer? Thanks.
How would the Allerton chair look mixed with an upholstered chair, like the Owen from Pier 1? Any comments appreciated.

Someone from Horchow should comment on the wood composition, but it is solid wood with a nice rich grain. Here are some pics.

Hi - we really appreciate all the comments on this post as we too are interested in this table but frustrated by the inability to find it in a store to look at it in person. Can the commenters who purchased it (thanks for the pics!) give us your thoughts on this one question? We will be in an apartment in Manhattan and this table will double as our kitchen/everyday table and our dining room table for entertaining. We want something that we won't be afraid to get some abuse - e.g. occasional spills, etc. - but that will still stay looking reasonably nice. It seems to us that there are 2 types of DR tables - (i) ones with a glossy/smooth surface that you worry about a scratch etc., which we think of as more classic 'dining' tables; and (ii) ones with a more wooden/grainy feel to the touch that can still look nice w/ a stain/varnish but which might take a beating a bit better (which we think of as more 'kichen' tables). We are looking for something that is durable like (ii) but still nice-enough looking like (i). Any thoughts on how this table fits that long-winded question? Thanks in advance!

This table will scratch easily. Even the delivery/set up people warned me about the scratching. I have it in my dining room and I would only use it if it had a pad on it. So, I don't think it will fit your needs.

I agree, this is not an everyday use table. Good for dining room for sunday dinner with either placemats or table cloth.
I bought the table! It TOTALLY fits 8 chairs, no matter what the Horchow people tell you. Beautiful for the price, but would scratch easily. I would not recommend this as an everyday table unless you use a pad. Thanks for all the help. Comfortable, contemporary, classy.

Hurray, just in time for the holidays.
FYI, I bought this set in the summer with 2 extra chairs. We hadn't used all of the chairs until a party last weekend, and a leg snapped off one chair while somebody was sitting in it!! Needless to say the poor girl tumbled to the floor and i was mortified. Horchow is at least sending a new chair, but the overall quality is sub-par...would not buy again.

Wow. And i almost got this set.

I bought the Allerton set for the holidays last year (2013). It looks beautiful but quality is quite poor. You can tell immediately if you see the underside of the table. As others have said, it does scratch quite easily, but Horchow customer service was phenomenal - they replaced the entire set for me at no charge, because my table scratched so easily within the first few days and the chairs had wobbly legs.

The pros are its cheap price and beautiful classic look (I purchased mine from Horchow when they had a 25% - 35% off sale). We are thinking of spending a few extra $$ to put a custom glass table on it to enjoy eating without worrying about scratches or spill marks (as we have 2 little kids). We also got felt pads for the chair legs from Amazon and that fixed the wobble. Now we can pull them out smoothly and with ease.

Though quality wasn't the greatest, we decided to keep the set. I'm going to attach a photo, but if you wish you can see the picture of our dining room here: http://heymamaonline.blogspot.com/2014/02/looking-for-home-decorating-ideas-here.html

    Hope this helps.

azelizabeth, did you buy the Ethan Allen Hathaway table? I am thinking of buying that table and pairing it with the Allerton chairs and would love any insights or comments on quality, comfort and overall look of both.
I am thinking of purchasing just the Allerton chairs from Horchow to match to an existing dining room table. Could someone tell me if the fabric has a pattern to it? And does the upholstery seem durable? Thanks for the help!!
The fabric is a micro suede that looks like beige linen.

Can anyone comment about the finish? I am looking for a dining table like this, but I want it as dark as possible. Some of the photos in the comments show a red undertone (which I do t want) and others show a darker finish. My dining room is bright.
Sorry. I meant to say, I do not want a red undertone in the finish.

I have the Allerton dining chairs. Originally I purchased 4 of them 3 years ago 2 years later i added 2 more. The chairs are very comfortable and clean up easily. The fabric is a type of microfiber suede cloth with a faint linen pattern. I love the chairs and they have held up well. The wood is a dark brown with very little red in it it mixes well with most of the dark woods. I don't personally have an issue with needing to exact match woods. If I am to rate the chairs from 1 - 5 they would be a 5 I do not have the table so I can not comment. I cane back to the site to see if the manufacture makes a counter height stool.

Hi, I am interested in the Allerton Dining table but concerned about the scratching comments. We are empty nesters with 20+ year old children. The table would not be used every night, but would it scratch easily if used for a Sunday dinner without a table cloth (or with a table cloth and no pad)? I would most likely want to display it without a table cover. Thanks for any insight.

I've been watching the Allerton chairs now for a year and am ready to purchase them and low and behold Horchow no longer have the chairs -- just 50 tables. It's apparent the chairs are more popular than the table. In reading some of the reviews herein, I am now concerned about the quality. Does anyone know of a furniture store (maybe higher end) that my carry a similar chair?

Hi, we just received the Allerton dining table and I love it, however, the table shakes a little bit...very slightly. Just does not seem that sturdy on its legs. I have one leaf inserted. Has anyone else who owns the table noticed this? I made sure all of the screws securing the table top to the legs are tight. Maybe it's because the leaf is inserted? I'm going to try to tighten some more just to see if that resolves. I want to keep it but maybe I got a bad table and need to replace it. Wanted to see what everyone's experience has been. Thanks much. Dan

    Love it!

I just received this table. Waiting for the matching chairs, as they are back ordered, but they are now available to order again and should arrive within 2 months. But this table would look nice with a variety of chair styles. No wonder why this is such a popular set. I could not be happier with this table. It looks much nicer than I expected for the price. Fits my small dining room perfectly, but come with 2 leaves if I want to expand it for holiday dinners. I will be having custom table pads made to protect the finish. This is just as nice as much, much higher priced stuff I looked at in other furniture stores.

Curious about the source of the chairs shown in the photos by viad5? They look great with the table. Thanks.

can someone comment on whether these chairs are easy to clean. these will be formal dining chairs, so we'll not use it daily., but we have young kids and these chairs will likely see food getting dropped, crayon marks etc. would it be easy to clean the material. Also, does the wood in the chair gets scratch marks easily. Some reviews mentioned that the table gets scrathed easily. not sure if chair is made of the same material. would really appreciate a quick response, as we have placed an order with the plan to cancel if answers here are too negative.

    Thanks.

Wow I can't believe how many people are going through the same dilemma I am on this table! I am really tempted to buy this to fit our transitional dining room with a mid-century vibe. I love the look but am so frustrated that horchow has no stores or anywhere that you can see it first hand. Do I pull the plug??! Many thanks to all the posters here with pictures included, it is so helpful. I think we are going to get this set in the end. We want an expandable oval table - I was also looking on craig's list as you can find some really nice things, but people many times don't respond to your emails. I found a Century Furniture beautiful table, but never head back from the guy. My really dilemma is do I go estate sale shopping, hoping to score a great vintage piece, or do like one king's lane, or buy this table and chairs which is a set you know matches. I am undecided, but this thread has me leaning towards the allerton set. Thoughts??

I bought the set and it arrived before Thanksgiving. I did have a set of custom table pads made to protect the finish. Is this the same quality as bench made in America? No. It also doesn't have the $15-$20K price tag those sets have either. But since I don't use my formal dining room more than a handful of times a year, I think the quality is perfectly fine. It looks very pretty and is comfortable to sit in. I used it over the holidays and was very happy with it.

Thanks pegnden! I am also considering this table and chairs from One King's Lane and Pottery Barn:

    https://www.onekingslane.com/p/4350900-bluffs-oval-ext-dining-table-sienna?li_source=base&li_medium=search

    http://www.pier1.com/corinne-ivory-dining-chair/2837108.html

But the nice thing about the horchow option is that it's a set - you know the chairs go with the table. Oh decisions!! thanks again

We bought the Allerton Table & chairs! I will report back when we get it (: Thnks for all the input here.

Update! We got the table and chairs. I have to say I am SO impressed with the quality. We absolutely love the set & are very happy we bought it. The table came first, a few weeks later the chairs. Not bad on delivery time really. We bought 8 chairs and have it set up with 6 as shown with just one leaf in. Anyone on the fence about this table, don't worry about quality, the wood is beautiful! I can't wait for our next dinner party in two weeks!!

Can anyone here post a photo of both leaves put in and with 8 chairs? I am looking to see if this will fit my dining room since i have a big dining room and i don't want it to look too small. Thank you all!!

This would fill a large dining room with both leaves and 8 chairs. Remember you want at least 36" between the table edge and any walls. I bought Ethan Allen Heston buffet. It looks gorgeous with the table and chairs.

Thank you! Do you have a picture of your full table and chairs?

Not right now. I usually just have one leaf and 6 chairs in place unless I am entertaining a large group.

I am considering buying the chairs. Are they comfortable and how is the fabric on the chairs? Horchow says polyesther and that makes me nervous!
