Question on design/construction contract terms

I am negotiating a design/construction contract and the contractor has inserted a provision limiting liability and recovery of damages to the amount paid to the contractor. This does not sit right with me, because in the event that some (unforseeable, but) shoddy workmanship causes massive damage to my condo or condo-neighbors, it seems only fair that the full amount of damages should be paid; not just what I paid to them.

So far, the feedback I got from the contractor is that "all of their contracts are limited liability like this."

Is that correct? Is it common for a design/construction contract to limit liability only up to the cost of the project?

Thanks for your help.
