Is it passe to install a TV above fireplace?

I hear it is not good for the TV or your neck! And maybe passe design concept? Thoughts?

I still have several clients that want their big screen TV's above their fireplaces. Here is a photo of one of my jobs.

Be careful to check with both the TV and fireplace manufacturer's specifications. Many TV's require a heat barrier or the mantel come out far enough to protect them from the heat.

In terms of your neck hurting, it will depend on the furniture. Mock up something above on your fireplace and try it out. Many sofas, recliners and occasional chairs tilt back enough to make the height comfortable. I haven't had any of my clients complain about it yet. I always like call my clients about a year after we complete their projects. That was one of my questions that I asked each of them, they had no complaints.

It's very bad for your neck as having it tilted back at an unnatural angle can lead to the formation of myofascial trigger points that refer pain elsewhere, especially to portions of the head. Since the pain is referred, most people including doctors don't realize that's the problem so lots of needless tests are ordered to no avail. I had a chronic headache due to a trigger point in my neck that lasted the better part of 8 years without letting up for more than a day or two! That and other symptoms are how I know about myofascial pain. Don't do something that can cause it.

Get a nice credenza for the TV, and put a nice picture or other piece of art work above on the mantle.

I still like fireplaces and T.V. in separate spaces if possiblebut if not then above the fireplace is just the best place when you are fighting 2 focal points. I find if I put the fireplace in the formal LR people actually use the space and when you have company the kids can still play games or watch T.V. while you have a lovely fire going and the adults are in the LR.

You'll probably have 50/50 responses for and against TV above fireplace. Personally I prefer a side by side setup if space is available.

Thank you all. I was not sold on it for our new build home and after my electrician gave me 4 scary instructions about the install and reading all of your comments, I am convinced it is not the way to go. You have helped me put my mind and neck at ease! Thank you again.
BTW - we did have a TV above fireplace at one time about a year ago ( home came that way) and my husband was always complaining of headaches. We didn't know why and voila! when we moved and no TV above fireplace but at eye level, his headaches disappeared.
