Why can't you put more art work up? That's what brings your personality into a room, and gives it the warmth and charm you want.

I would try to find an oversized piece of art work of something you love for the wall.

Thanks, Hayley! I'm concerned that more artwork would compete with the art above the fireplace, but maybe the more the merrier? I also thought of reversing the art and mirror. Maybe I have too many choices-LOL!

Can you paint the whole room?

Thanks JudyG! Retro, if you mean could I paint the whole room a dark blue, then no, as it's connected to the kitchen and entryway. The other walls are a neutral khaki-linen color.

That gorgeous portrait could look fabulous on your dark wall. The mirror will probably be too small above your fireplace. What you have on your blue wall is too small, you could add to it and make it a gallery wall. You could definitely hang striking art on all walls. Why not? In a museum they do it too.
The plaid chairs are a bit busy. Maybe you could get (off)white slipcovers for them.

Vicky, you're the final authority on what works and what doesn't as you have to live with it. How much art work a room has is a personal decision as is anything else. My rule of thumb is that if it looks good, and I like it there, it works. I have a fair amount of art work up as I love photographs of the outdoors, and I think it's one of the reason I love my house as I have things I love to look at on the walls.

I would move your art to the blue wall for even greater impact and appreciation (remove other two items). Then create a really interesting, layered mantle. [houzz=]

Black and white prints look great on a dark wall!

Love the plaid chairs. They look great with wall. Yes lower chandelier remove the brown leather chair as it looks crowded. Mirror is too small but I agree you can add some more art it maybe one oversize art piece or triptych.
