Fabric Is Not The Color We Expected!

Our son ordered 20 yards of HBF Spellbound in Thyme to reupholster a 1970 s couch, but the fabric is darker and less blue than he thought. The couch is to go with his Lucky Turquoise Nixon chair from Thrive. He is disappointed. Can we help him make this work?

Nice chair. Perhaps a couple of pillows with some turquoise, not too matchy, would look good on the couch. If he is really unhappy with the fabric, return it if possible or sell it on ebay before investing in the cost of reupholstering. And....no skirt.

The fabric is very nice, nicer in fact than the sofa which is pretty nondescript. I don't see that sofa with the skirt working well with the Thrive chair. The fabric and cost of labor is way more that the value of the finished product. Maybe that fabric could be used on a Thrive sofa. I think the colors may work together, hard to tell from photos.

The 1970s sofa was his great grandparents. He got the fabric for $200. I have suggested a non-skirted sofa. He has been told it will be $770 to reupholster the sofa. The fabric is nice, but online it looked lighter. And bluer. I have suggested removing th sofa skirt.

Since the fabric was so inexpensive, and he's not happy with it, get a different fabric. Also, some fabric stores will accept returns of large amounts of fabric.It's worth a try. Lastly, I'd advise to get a sample first before buying it.

I definitely agree withthe other, no skirt. I think the two colors will work though. But if he can't live with the fabric then there is no sense of wasting any more money trying to reupholster the furniture. Good Luck!

$200...it could be worse!

You can make it work, though as others have said you will have $950 invested in a sofa that he may not particularly like in the end.

White walls. Then something very cool on the floor to bring it together.

But beware of rug colors over the internet. Certain light, certain camera, certain photo processing, certain monitor display. Each step changes the color from the actual color. Even slightly, by the time it gets to your monitor (as you have found out with your fabric purchase) the colors may be completely different!

One more suggestion. If your son decides to reupholster the couch, perhaps the cushions could be remade with firmer padding. They tend to slump over the years. Take a cue from the midcentury modern design of the chair.

Agree with your suggestion, Nancy. Grandparents sofa doesn't quite do it with the chair, IMO. Add the cost of the fabric to the labor...maybe buying new would be the solution.

The velvet sofa is on Overstock for under $1000.00 and gets a 5* rating.
