An option to consider is wood grain tile! They are available at many manufacturers and in many colors and sizes.

Consider how much time you spend in the kitchen. Tile is harder on the feet over long periods of standing.

Honestly I would stay away from tile just because @8 years ago we decided to replace carpet (which was @1700 of 1960 sqft. Track house) In front formal living/dining room hallway and 4 bedrooms and the area of the great room where fireplace is and vinyl flooring (kitchen and bathrooms). We only carpeted the bedrooms and did porcelain 18"x18" tiles throughout. I was @38y/o with balance and back problems thinking wood floors wood be too much work or scratch easily by dog and kids... or I might slip... and sturdy porcelaine would be best and a nice upgrade to our base model home. Well now my husband has knee, back and ankle problems. My Mother came out and ended up couch bound for her 3 month visit bc her back and knees took a beating the first week walking on the tile. I'm in daily pain and anyone who visits for a few days leaves taking anti-inflammatories and actually arrive with pain meds in hand! I just read bamboo is a good choice or laminate.

I went for tile so I wouldn't have to worry about drying drips all the time, but either is a good choice. It's true tile is hard but wood isn't exactly soft. With either, I like to have a rug in the area I stand most frequently.

Not to mention the upkeep of the grout lines! I just said to my husband that when we replace bedroom carpet I want carpeting back in at least the formal living and fireplace/TV room (great room). It kills me to do it bc of the cost of the tile job but everyone's physical well-being is more important! Lol

I use the stress mats. Mine is extreme bc we have tile in majority of house but it's great for me doing dishes bc I'm a bit messy with water. Easy clean up.

We went for hardwoods because we wanted to warm up a modern white kitchen. I think both are nice. For me it would really just depend on the look I was going for. I like a lot of the more contemporary rectangular tiles you are seeing now.

Large tiles are nice, but before even considering tile, ensure that your existing structure and subfloor is stiff enough for it or you'll end up with cracking and a ruined floor.

We purchased a brick ranch/bungalow and will have four weeks to do a total kitchen renovation before we actually move into the house. We're thinking of white cabinets both top and bottom with island (dark wood base). We would also like to put hardwood (and/or tile in the kitchen) throughout the house. It currently has linoleum floors in the kitchen and has carpeting in the living/dining and bedrooms. My husband and I are planning to spend 20+ years in this house and want it to be "getting up in age friendly".
