Vacuum recommendations?

Our new home is 80% hardwood and the rest is tile. Any recommendations for a vacuum? As much as I loved our Dyson I noticed at the old house that it scrapes hard flooring if the brushes are off and left on the brushes can scratch. I would like to pamper this new floor as much as I can.

I'm not a fan of Dyson, particularly on solid surfaces. I've been using a Miele canister for the past 15 years and it has performed flawlessly. It also performs better than any Dyson I've tried. Even with picking up the hair of two Labradors this vacuum has performed well. And lasted! Friends who buy other brands seem to be buying a new vacuum every year or so. The Miele is expensive but it's built to last so there is value for money there. Prior to getting my Miele, I had an Electrolux canister for years. It also performed very well. I don't know if they are the same quality as they used to be, but based on past performance I would consider one.

Check with your flooring manufacturer for recommendations, especially if you have carpet. Many manufacturers specifically prohibit the use of a Dyson on their products. The OP doesn't have any carpet.

I am interested in this as well. I was going to buy a Shark but I don't know now.

Roomba 880 has changed my life in a very positive way. (And I have a really great central vac installed as well.)

Oreck makes a nice compact model that has a strap on it and you carry it around on your shoulder. Comes with attachments for wood floors that won't scratch. Can use same attachment for tile. Makes it easy to get around things and can easily be used on stairs and for drapes, etc. While it doesn't apply to your particular situation, the unit is not intended for carpet.

I have two stairs between the entry and the main level. Will the Roomba keep falling off the stairs? Or will I just have to do that area by hand?

Look at a Sebo...I have one at the beach house (about 60% hardwood) and love it. Also have a shark to steam the floors occasionally.

Never use steam on wood floors. Tile or vinyl, sure.

Humidity from the beach / waterfront causes more damage than occasional steam cleaning.

Clarification:
- There is no carpet anywhere in this house.
- The Dyson will not be used on these floors. That's why I'm looking for recommendations.

The manufacturer of the floor is a small company…..their only recommendation is something that works for wood floors.

We have two Australian Cattle Dogs and three cats……a vacuum will be necessary, but it's a matter of…..which one.

(I'm looking into the ones already suggested….thanks!)

I bought a Miele 2 yrs ago after having Electrolux models for 44 yrs. LOVE the Miele. I read as much as I could on the internet and then went to a local rep and learned more about all of the different attachments that would work best for my floors and needs. Cost a little more but my husband and I feel it has been worth the investment.

I have central vac, but was considering buying something (I hate hanging that long hose, I never get it right) I asked the gal who helps me around the house what her favorite vac was and she said Kenmore.

But, I am moving and most of my flooring will be porcelain. Have you read this? Looks interesting.

We decided to go with a stick broom vacuum since we mostly keep everything swept. I guess we'll see how well that goes. Our Dyson will go in the basement where it can't do any damage, but will also be very helpful in cleaning up the dog hair in the dog room. Rather than go for a pricey unit at this time we just went with a Bissell Featherweight for now so we can gauge how much more of a vacuum we'll need. It's just so hard to know when everything is so different from the last house!
