I would also move your sectional a little closer towards the t.v. and place a console behind it. A great place to add baskets to hold small toys.

Are you keeping your ottoman? what color is your ottoman? Dark brown?

Thanks so much for these ideas Njmomma!! Super helpful because I've been stumped. The drapes are somewhat limiting, but I'm stuck with them for the minute because we just moved and got solar blinds (not shown) to match the shade of beige. Yes, my ottoman is a dark brown and I'm keeping it for now. Currently, behind the sofa I have a little play are for my toddler but a console would definitely help to keep the toys more organized. So a Navy sectional might be the best color choice for a new piece of furniture. Thanks for all of these ideas. Any suggestions for floor lamp placement? I don't have one yet but wondered about the following styles...Thinking that the first one might match the casual feel of the rom more..

Wait on accessories.

Get the main items first. Get a feel for the room. Then accessories.

A sofa and two chairs is the most flexible. Second would be a sectional and one chair. Loveseats are the least conducive to arranging, so I'd drop that idea, even if the big box store sales rep offers you a "deal" to take a "set."

Well, I think I'd take your time and work to figure out the main items first, exactly as njmomma said. I think the rug blues and green of the drapes could work together well with items like njmomma pictured above. For example, with a navy sofa or sectional and bright green chair. BUT, then the ottoman just won't work at all. So, even though I think a navy sofa is a nice idea, I don't like that plan with the current ottoman. If the ottoman stays, I think I'd buy a sofa the light beige from the rug or drapes and replace either the green portion of the drapes or the rug and paint just the wall behind the sofa in a dark accent color. Basically, there are a few directions you could go, but honestly, I don't think it will be easy to figure out a plan with the blue of the rug, brown of the ottoman, and green of the drapes. If any one of those is eliminated, the situation becomes much more workable.

Thanks for your considerations Ann. If the draperies stay and I choose a navy sectional, what would be better options for the rug and ottoman color? (The dark color of the ottoman was originally chosen with the leather sofa and for practicality with an active little boy... It could eventually be moved to the basement but not right away). I considered a light cream couch but I want a fabric couch in this room, not leather, and we're just not there yet with a toddler..

Well, if the ottoman can go downstairs (eventually), you could keep the drapes and rug and go with a navy sofa and then maybe a green accent chair like njmomma pictured and definitely solid green and solid cream pillows on the navy sofa. I'd work with solids in the room since you have a lot of pattern with the drapes and rug. I think if you limit your colors to navy, cream and green, it will look fantastic. Then, when the ottoman goes, think about a coffee table instead. You might want to consider livelier, bigger art in blue and green - maybe a canvas abstract from art.com or something.

I do think if you purchase a navy sofa, you might end up moving the ottoman out sooner than later because I think the navy won't look at all good with the dark brown ottoman. But, the navy, cream and green combo could look great!

I think your rug is what is off actually and doesn't flatter the curtains etc. Buy a new one is my opinion....navy would be too dark - the sort of teal, bright blue couch maybe, and the post above with blue and green chair and rug was ok... truthfully I think you'd do better with current couch etc. and new rug.

I do not think the rug is right for the room, either. It isn't the right size. A rug would look better if it were at least as wide as the sofa and a plain color. Add different throw pillows. I like the leather, neutrals and greens and would stay with that scheme.I do like the sofa you have now. I would invest in two chairs to face the sofa. Keep them low so that they do not interfere with t v watching and buy swivels to add two more seats for viewing..

HI -- Get a bigger rug that is more texture and less of a pattern . Put the printed drape panels on the outside ends instead of the stripe sections you have now . For furniture , you could have a 3 seat sofa with or without a lounge end and two swivel base accent /lounge chairs or a square modular sectional sofa with an accent chair . I think love seats are useless --- hard to place . Don't buy a matching sofa and love seat set . Two chairs are more useful than a love seat . Navy for a sofa is ok but I think you get the test of time keeping the big furniture pieces mostly neutral . Navy will also show lint etc. more . The sofa you have now will still work and just add the chairs ... ottoman is good too. Pick your accent colors out of the printed drapes if your keeping those .

I'm glad that somebody brought up the rug. Honestly, the largest disjuncture here for me is the somewhat traditional/garden feel of the curtains versus the more modern/geometrical pattern of the rug. I agree that to change the latter would be easiest. My leaning would be to get a grey couch (fits better with the black-and-white kitchen too) and a mild (is that the word?) rug -- maybe even a traditional "carpet" style with a mix of fibers that gives us some texture (tans, greys, and/or greens). Then the grey couch (dark legs would help make the ottoman match), and suddenly your pillows are doing the job of unifying everything.

Also agree with moving the couch forward -- 18 feet is a room length that's ripe for subdivision. THat would make your TV viewing more natural, keep the rug size needed to cozy up the sitting area from breaking the bank, and leave you room for a play area or even a game table behind the couch. Of course, we're still missing a view of the fourth corner of the open space, so I'm not sure what you have in terms of the style and colors of your eating (??) space...

Sounds like most want you to replace the rug. If you go that direction, you could stick with the ottoman, but then the idea of a navy for a sofa isn't great. So, I think you should decide what you really want to stay and what can go and then we can try to help with the color scheme of what will stay. If the drapes and ottoman stay, I think a neutral sofa (beige/cream) would be great. There are some very durable stain resistant fabrics out there these days that might be just fine with a little one and a light color. I recently had some chairs recovered in Crypton, which any stain can just be wiped off with a damp cloth.

I would remove the green drapes then start to decorate. They seem to dominate your design and from what I'm hearing you don't like them, so stop trying to decorate around them.

I love the green panels but I would place them either on the outside or the inside not in the middle . For the rug get a plain one and only one colour no pattern you have enough on the drapes .

I would consider changing the curtains! What is behind the curtains?

Brighter lighting will brighten the mood in the room.

Thank you so much everyone for your ideas- I'm very grateful...certainly wish I had more skills in this area! We just moved and had brought the curtains with us- I had them made abroad in an attempt to bring a tropical feel to the main area if our home. This is balanced by our modern living room (neutral drapes, shah rug etc). The sofa pictured will be moved to this room so I do have an opportunity to buy a new sectional and am interested in the coziness of fabric instead of leather. Thought first of navy blue because of its slightly more forgiving nature/less fuss with our toddler...The drapes are staying for the next few years as they are matched to our solar shade (pictured) and will likely be more expensive than the sofa to replace. And plus, we can utilize this sofa in another room as mentioned. Interesting idea about the rug being part of the problem- not surprised that it's because of my modern/tropical jumbled leanings. My vision for the room was for it to be a bright, vibrant room with a tropical air that was cozy and functional for my family..I've taken additional pictures to show the different walls in the room and what the space looks like with the curtains drawn I have swapped the rug in our living room with the rug here to see what this could look like. So.... if the drapes are staying, the sofa is going and the rug could go, what would be my best option for the color of the new fabric sofa?

Even if you wanted to match the ottoman, would you be able to get the same shade of brown in a sofa or sectional. Dye lots if not bought together can be a problem, so can sunlight, fading etc.

I also think this rug pic above is too small for the area.

You had some good insights above about your vision for the room. If a tropical, bright, vibrant feel is important to you, and you are keeping the tropical color green curtains, then you need to repeat that color and feel in the things you are going to buy. You like modern too, but you have lots of modern style in your adjacent kitchen, and need to add to the tropical feel, not to the modern feel.

I think your existing sofa looks fine, but if you prefer a fabric sofa I would get one in a similar color. It's neutral, looks good with the green curtains. Don't get anything much lighter or it won't be suitable for your toddler. A print fabric can be more practical than a solid. Definitely not navy, which is a very un-tropical color.

Your navy patterned carpet has a very un-tropical color and design. The neutral one looks better color-wise, although it is too small. A flat weave (sisal-look?) would look better, again a small pattern would be practical and attractive.

Your brown ottoman will look better with this neutral + green color scheme. Add a large flat tray on top (neutral, green or woven) for practicality, and to further the scheme. It will also break up the rather bulky look.

I would re-hang your curtains so that the patterned sections are on the outside. Then you need to repeat the green color in pillows, which should be feather filled , and no smaller than 21 inches so they're big, cosy and squishy. Only one needed on each side. Be sure the fabric is nice to touch. This also looks more modern than multiple smaller pillows. I don't know if you want throws, they're neither modern nor tropical. I wouldn't.

Art work or decorative items should repeat the tropical green theme. If you have any art work with a lot of green, bring it into this room. The curtains would look fabulous with a big art piece with lots of tropical greens. It should hang over the sofa and be at least 2/3 the width of the sofa. Your existing picture is the right size to go in the kitchen, where the very small picture now is.

Use black picture frames in this room, to echo the black of the kitchen. Any metal should be silver/pewter/nickel rather than a warm tone. A big green bowl on your kitchen counter or table would look wonderful.

You have a beautiful start in the room but need to focus on your tropical vision.

Several people have now mentioned that the rug sizing is too small for the area, but I'm unable to find the 'rule' for this. Can this be shared? (i.e. is it 3/4 the size of the flooring?)

Great ideas on how I can tie in the theme through small and large accessories...this helps a great deal (I too, don't like the bulky look of the ottoman and would down the road prefer a pin-tucked style if any, but it's a highly functional item right now- useful suggestion re: the type of tray I could add).

I wonder, when I finally select a sectional (likely a two seat plus right hand facing chaise option (i.e. the chaise portion will be by the wall against the window) or a straight L-shape, and when I finally sort out the rest of the details for the rug et al., where would be the most logical spot to place a floor lamp for ambient lighting? In the far corner behind the couch by the patio door?

Also, (don't kill me) is there any room to introduce any pops of red into this theme, or would that be pure madness? Thanks again for your detailed response, and to all who have added insights..

I wouldn't introduce pops of red. Not now at least. You need more green for 2 reasons - to establish your tropical scheme and bring out the color in your drapes. Do that first - don't be distracted about what you may need to do later as a finishing touch. I don't think of red as a particularly tropical color, at least until you have a lot more green in there. For fun, can you wrap your existing pillows in some green fabric that you may have (a shirt or scarf?). You'll see how the green picks up the colors in the drapes.

How would your room look without a rug - just a thought. As far as size, the rug should go well under the front feet of all the chairs in the seating area. About halfway or so under each chair, and at least the width of the sofa. If you don't know yet the exact size of your seating, maybe you should buy those first. Or be generous with your rug size.

Your cabinets are espresso? not black? Practical for sink - I searched on houzz using 'art hibiscus pink'
And if you like red/ hibiscus pink, buy art with it.

I agree to move the patterned panels to the outside of the plain ones. Do you need to get another sofa? this one goes with your colors best. Please get a different area rug, sized as pointed out by Partim. I would go for a solid color for the area rug. I like the one that genevieve posted. You can buy an ottoman cover taking care of the no brown issue. Ikea carries them. If you are creative you could use a fitted plain color twin sheet & do some altering. Easy to remove & wash. Again no more patterns. Keep the colors to white, off-white, shades of go-together green & some yellow. Look on Houzz Shop & there are some beautiful large art with striking greens with plants. Pick up some cube storage stools to throw toys in & use for added seating. I would not go with a sectional or sofa/loveseat combo. Much too hard to arrange. Left click on my name to pull up my ideabooks for art & I have many accent chairs for under $300.00 each. I would buy matching chairs w/ a cube in between. Buy an arc floor lamp for easy placement.

I think I would place two occasional chairs or those cubes you can sit on and move around. You can place them where the table is and one in from of the windows. I'm not a fan of placing love seats in front of a nice row of windows if you can help it.

Do a sectional "L" shape. With 2 swivel chairs in n a background of sofa and a print. Remove the print curtains leave just the white. A navy blue sectional with white piping would work . Area rug go a 8x10 in a white shag. Big 24" square or round coffee table or ottoman.

Add white and navy stripe and print pillows to sofa. Get a much bigger art piece for wall. 40" would work, IKEA sells a black and white sky line. Not expensive. A end table with a white base and navy shade.

I would take TV off wall and put on a low media center. IKEA sells dark wood. Just sit TV on it. Over firepl add a big45" sunburst mirror. Remove small table not needed with media. Add a tall plant instead.

Instead add a chest in dark wood to right of FP. To put components. Instead of chairs. Add 2-3 bar stools to kitchen bar. Then use it. TJMax a good place for above items. IKEA also.

Get a toy chest and place behind sectional. You have a very small room. So keeping clutter to a minimum is important.

Please do not match sofa to that brown ottoman. Recover it in a bold wide navy and white stripe. That will work so much better with a Navy sectional. Recovering is easy. Just measure then get fabric bigger, the get a staple gun and that's it.

I do not get a tropical feel on this room. Do not like green with the navy. Like curtains open. You could add a dark brown bamboo shade to windows just keep rolled half way dn. Home Depot, Lowes carry.

I think adding red to navy and white room would look to much like 4 th of July. You could put some red in kitchen in canisters. Instead of chest for components. Try a narrow bookcase, with storage. Then add just a few items to shelves, you could add a red item. Some books lay on side and plants.

I have had a navy sofa and it actually showed a lot of hair, dust & stains - also limited the palate of the room. I am much happier with my more neutral stone/gray/taupe-ish sectional from Crate & Barrel in a textural, easy-care finish. (I almost bought linen and even with grown kids I'm so glad I didn't). Neutrals for the big pieces means I can change out accessories and paint and the whole look of the room every few years or even every season. Love the rug suggested by Judy G Designs!

So far, I have changed the couch to a white leather sectional which has done wonders to brighten the room, tie the curtains in, and balance the space. I have also gotten a large green canvas artwork to hang behind the couch, which has also helped to tie the colors in. Still searching for a different rug, but I'm very happy with the progress and appreciate all the feedback.
