I'd definitely replace the counter and back splash but think the cabinets are quite nice and it would be cheaper to keep them. Maybe something a bit less busy like a simple white or a grey counter would work better? And maybe update the tile floor too?

Have the cabinets professionally painted if they're too traditonal for you.

I mean if you don't like them, don't assume you can paint them yourself and have them look the way you expect them to. It isn't nearly as easy as the home renovation shows make it appear.

I have oak cabinets, and really like the look of wood. Most people prefer white cabinets but it's personal choice. Go with what you prefer, but get it done professionally so it looks the way you expect it to.
