Take the cement out. You don't have to be limited by whatever was there previously. More than trinkets, I enjoy green. So don't add stuff just to have something there. If you want to add more potted plants, like really large palms, that would work.

and then plant either a large low palm, a bougainvillea tree or some other plant that would have the effect of a large bonsai

I like your idea, rricky. Get the big bowl and create a bonsai look. You already gave grass. That would be a striking look.

What about a large fountain with a boarder of low boxwood around it? Or a large fire pit with seating around it? My personal preference would be to remove it, put in grass and add some additional plants to your back yard.

I agree, fountain or firepit.... but I think you need some more landscaping out there. Right now it's very simple and it would be nice to do a great modern landscape and incorporate it somehow. Some inspiration...

I'd use it as a foundation for a very modern water feature or a modern garden sculpture. Either would be really spectacular with midcentury decor. If your heart is set on a planter I would suggest something contemporary and even perhaps a bit architecturally edgy. Perhaps a very large shallow concrete bowl perched on top of a square shape concrete pedestal (?) Then plant it up with an interesting tree specimen with twisted trunk and roots exposed or even a collection of textural cascading succulents. Don't forget to place a few directional spot lights around it for evening drama!

I rendered the pot idea but a water feature would be awesome -- now to find the right piece!

Pot with Palm tree. Or go Rectangular with a nice koi pond.
