Unless you are looking to go super bold, I would stick with a neutral light taupe/beige color with all white wainscoting (everything from the chair rail down in semi-gloss white), then do an accent wall or two in different colors to define certain areas and make them pop. Another good interior design trick is to take a favorite piece of artwork that hangs in a room and pull colors out of the to bring the whole room together. It may be as small as some red pillows on your couch or as large as a whole red accent wall (or whatever color you choose.) Lots of luck and post the after pics when you decide what to do.

I would paint bottom portion of the wall grey, even under the granite bar. Leave all the trim in Wayne's coating white. Grey and yellow go very nicely together and since the floors are golden oak the grey will break that up for you. Then carry that grey or another tone of grey into your living room. I noticed your sectional is grey, that's fine. I would add light blue throw pillows/ and or throw. Hang white drapes from top of the wall. It would be very cool & relaxing and flow nicely. Although the gray/yellow combo would work, I just cannot live with the yellow at all.

I'd like a glamorous, modern feeling and I prefer cooler colors but I'm struggling with how to cool colors will work with the very traditional kitchen cabinets.

I would paint the entire thing grey. I would not even do an accent color for the trim. Your home is obviously modern and the trim is new but trying to look old. I think it just gets too busy having all those chair rails and squares. Plus, it can actually look really sophisticated to have the baseboards, trim, and walls in one color. I love edgecomb grey from Benjamin Moore. Maybe do all the walls and trim in this color with just the baseboards in the same color but glossier. Check out this family room with it. While they use pink a punchy accent color, the edge comb can take any color as an accent.

We painted our entire main rooms Accessible Beige and are very happy with it. It reads beige in the day, a little more grey after the sun goes down. Contrasting trim, accent walls are, thankfully, fading out. Paint should be a backdrop for your furniture, art, accessories, etc, not a focal point. Nice space, lots of possibilities!

If what you really want is " modern glamorous feel with cool colors" then go for it. Your kitchen cabinets look brown(neutral) will go with any color/colors you wish. The very worst thing that could happen is you will have to paint it again...I don't suspect that will happen:)

The cabinets & backsplash were here when we moved in. Recently I have been into cool colors and they work nicely with my brown cabinets. Can't wait to see what you decide, good luck!

We just painted our downstairs space SW Anew Grey and SW Greige. The family has all cool colors in the blue, green grey beige pallette. Love!!!

I recently painted my entryway, kitchen and family room BM deserted island and I love it. Brightens up all the rooms and goes with everything. Good luck!

Red in a kitchen looks really nice if you have wooden cabinets. So does green. And any shade of brown, from light to dark, blends really well with it and flows.
