Have a large island...whether to put sink or stove on island

Here are a couple of considerations:

If you put the stove in the island you will need to think about venting. You can either have a downdraft or an island canopy hood. If you choose the downdraft option you will need to make sure you have a straight run between the floor joists to the outside wall. If you choose the canopy hood you will either need to be able to vent it straight through the roof, or have space between the joists in the ceiling to run it out the side wall. You should also consider whether the canopy would block any views into your kitchen or out any windows. Putting the sink in the island also requires consideration with respect to where to run the plumbing, but this is sometimes easier than running venting.

Safety is another consideration. Will people be sitting at the island behind the stove? Putting the stove in the island then requires enough space behind for safety.

Personally I like to put the stove against the wall and make it a feature area, and put the sink in the island, with the dishwasher on one side and a pullout garbage/recycling on the other.

Best of luck with your project!

We have a sink in ours and love it. A lot of people gather around the island so I didnt want to do a stove there.

Having a sink on the island is usually for kitchens that don't have any windows.

this is all really helpful! Do you end up with tons of dishes scattered all over the island?

I guess I should clarify...If you have a sink in the island do you have dirty dishes that you're always looking at? Do they manage to go directly into the dishwasher? What about pots and pans?

That really depends more on you and your family, rather than on the placement of the sink ;)

If you tend to leave dishes in the sink or around the sink, then you will still have them, whether it be on the island or along the wall.

A second dishwasher or a dishwasher drawer can help to keep dishes in check if they are an issue for you.

I have 2 sinks in my island one on each side as for pots and pans I always wash them in the DW they look new 15 yrs later. Yes you have to be a bit tidier but I love mine in the island and just so you know I have a huge window in my kitchen that I did not want to cover with cabinets.

HI -- A good kitchen has a stove backed to a wall and a sink is better for an island .

There are a few things to think about, first off how big is your island?
If your sink is in the island then your dishwasher should be as well.
Which ever you decide, the either sink or range in island, the depth should be at least 30" deep. You need space beyond your faucet or back of range so items do not fall off or splashing of water.
