Evaporation for container cooling

Hello,

I have trouble with my "earthbox-style" containers getting too hot in the middle of the Texas summer. I was thinking of trying various ways to keep them cooler, i.e. painting them white or covering them with some reflective material.

One thing I thought I might try is to wrap the entire container in some sort of light(in color) absorbent material, then connecting the material to the main reservoir (these are self-watering, remember). That way, water would continually wick up into the material and evaporate, hopefully cooling the container. I understand this would use more water, but it is a trade-off I'm willing to take.

Has anyone tried this sort of thing?

As an aside, I was also thinking about the basic "earthbox-style" design. The bottom screen which separates the soil from the reservoir (with airspace in between) is perforated, to allow oxygen in through the bottom. This makes sense to me. However, why not drill holes all over the sides of the container, too? Wouldn't this improve aeration even further? Or is the lateral distance too great for significant diffusion?

Just some thoughts,

Ed.
