Need help with my guest bedroom!

I am in the process of re-decorating my guest bedroom. I have painted the walls, made new curtains, and bought a new duvet cover. I'm not completely finished yet (planning on getting a round mirror to hang over the bed as well as light grey shades to go in the windows), but I need help with throw pillows.

What color or pattern would anyone suggest for a few throw pillows on the bed? I'm thinking of doing one large long pillow with 2 smaller square ones in front, but am open for suggestions about that as well. Mainly I am having trouble thinking of what color or pattern would go with the duvet cover but still pop. I was thinking yellow? Need suggestions, please!

You may already know this, but Crate and Barrel has the matching Merimekko print pillow that you could coordinate with a couple of solid pillows in white or kiwi. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/the-marimekko-shop/pillows/marimekko-pieni-unikko-white-20%22-pillow/s149449 Cute, cheerful guestroom by the way!

What a fun print! Since there is a lot of pattern already on the bed, I would go with solids. If you wanted to add a pop of colour, maybe burnt orange? Since your walls are grey (I think?), a charcoal/graphite would also look great. Personally, I would go with the graphite with green piping, either a solid or a pattern for a long narrow pillow....and do the small pillows in the lighter shade of green. I like bedrooms to be calm.

Love the suggestions you already received. To that I would suggest solid = red. Bed bolster about 9" in diameter and 45" long. : )

I love the zig zag pattern Manon Floreat suggested. keeping it graphic I would take the color of the walls, just a little darker and the black, white, and lightest green of the duvet in solids and patterns then I would introduce a pop of color, some of these have already been suggested; bright orange, red or hot pink - something in the red family. Beautiful job, love the fabric! One more thing switching up the back-ground color pops too. In other words a black background with white and green or new accent color will set off against the design you have now.

You have sewn curtain? What color? If they are neutral, I would bring a shade to the window in the acid green of the duvet. I would not recommend a mirror over the bed. My choice would be to select a piece of art to "ground" your colors. As for the new pillows on the bed, I would do one. I would pick up the acid green again in some sort of abstract pattern.

I would not add throw pillows at all. When I am a guest ( or even in my own home) I never know where to put them! Instead, I would put a textured throw folded up at the end of the bed in one of the colors of the spread.

Oh Manon (all Houzzers)! Kelli has a gem of a project, a little ski chalet that definitely could use her TLC. Check it out https://www.houzz.com/discussions/bought-4-season-lake-cabin-in-process-of-remodeling-what-would-you-do-dsvw-vd~119362 Again I apologize for the interruption folks, back to your regular scheduled programming!

Sharon I got the duvet cover at Crate & Barrel. Isn't it so fun?

Wow everyone thanks so much for all the GREAT advice!!! Manon those pillows are so perfect! I think I'm going to head in that direction, although I do like the idea of a burnt orange or red pop of color too.

My fiance would agree about not knowing what to do with throw pillows. He hates them. But I can't help but want to add them, it really helps to complete a room :)

Why more pillows. Sometimes less is more. If you must how about one small white pillow. The rest of the room looks nice.

I have always loved Merimekko and like seeing this duvet on a real bed, not on a website :). How about some funky hooks for jacket, hoodie, or purse, for your guests and a cool tray on the dresser for wallet, coins, jewelry, keys... so cute, nice job!

Great start to your Guest Room!
I would place a round pine mirror over the dresser, add a luggage stand, some fresh flowers, and move the glass lamp onto a bedside table. As for accent cushions, solid lime green, stony colour of the walls with mother-of-pearl buttons, and a crisp white & black plaid. Maybe even lay towels in the same colour theme out for your guests.

I like Manon's chevron pillow with a couple of smaller ones the palest color of the center or the flower....looks great! :)

Very cute guest room! It is so inviting. I love throw pillows too, they seem to complete a bedroom and Manon's chevron pillow is a must! But I do agree that they are annoying to guest. One solution that has worked for me is having a chest or large trunk at the foot of the bed. It is where I keep extra blankets for my guest bedroom. I invite my guest to use it to store the throw pillows during their stay. That way everyone is happy!

Also, a pop of color or accent wall (burnt orange) would make for a nice touch. I recommend to place your accent wall behind the bed along with some fun artwork or mirror.

I'm in the camp of lime green with Manon's zig zag. I like the geometric next to the large floral. http://www.etsy.com/listing/77146022/mod-green-chevron-zig-zag-lumbar-pillow?utm_source=googleproduct&utm_medium=syndication&utm_campaign=GPS

oh my I love all these pillows. I love seeing pillows on the bed and it doesn't bother me making the bed everyday either. For some reason don't know why some men aren't crazy about a lot of pillows To me it makes the bed want a person to come get in and get snugly Love your room sooooooooooo much

hey I like the suggestion of the black chest that would be sooooooooo nice. I just painted a sideboard black yesterday. love it. Used that paint they advertise with primer already in it loved it. In this room that black chest would look great with that bedding and walls
  • 14 years ago
I love the paint color with the silvery stuff & bold bedding. What about hanging the mirror over the chest? It would reflect the view from the window & it would be a back up to bathroom mirror. What do you think about "fun words" over the bed?
The head board is plenty interesting - skip the mirror over the bed. Besides, according to Feng Shui beliefs, a mirror over the bed steals your soul during the night. Mirrors in the bedroom are bad in general in Feng Shui unless they reflect the door (directing bad energy back out) and they cannot reflect the bed (or the above soul snatching happens). There is a lot going on with the bed - it's a lovely print. Maybe some fun artwork over the dresser. I do agree a mirror in a guest room is nice - in case they want to put on make-up. Maybe try a small one near an outlet or table/dresser in case they wish to put make-up on or check their outfit?

no mirror over the bed Fun words might be nice

I agree with poster jbrill: no need for pillows at all. If you must, just one in a solid with some texture. Like the idea of a throw at the end of the bed. I would put nothing over the bed, think it looks great now!

What you could do: Add a dresser scarf. Put a mirror over the dresser for your guests to use. Trim lamp with the green and brown. Paint dresser knobs white or green for fun. Add a small fun framed piece of art near dresser.

Take your room for a test drive: what do guests need? A comfy chair and reading lamp? Magazines and books? Some water and a glass? A basket for some goodies? A luggage rack and extra hangers? And: an extra blanket!
