Brussels Sprouts cover

Hey guys. Quick question.

I have 6 Brussels Sprouts plants growing in a big wine barrel. I know they need the space between them for roots and air, but since they will pretty much be just stalks, I want to plant a low cover annual to make the pot look prettier, retain soil water, and to discourage our local squirrels from digging. Are a cover crop of 6" violas ok in terms of height and nutrients drain? I don't want to put something in that will hurt the sprouts, as they are the main priority for the pot.

Thanks,

Maria
