Many people find this a difficult plant to grow, especially in the winter. (I'll bet it didn't mention THAT on the tag,lol). I don't grow it myself, but will guess that lack of high humidity is one problem, as is the ability to keep this plant uniformly moist without overwatering.

The typical potting mix is a real challenge for those plants that prefer to be kept on the moist side: they don't drain rapidly enough and are often too fine textured to allow for superior aeration all throughout the container. Thus, providing a moist soil environment ends up causing problems for the roots.

I'd certainly hold off on any fertilizing at this time; save that for the active growing season when the days get longer.

Let's see, other 'issues' with this plant might be cold or warm or dry drafts, too little light.

Thank you Rhizo. I had some tropicals before that needed to be misted, and fussed over. They are long gone by now, and I wanted something durable and self-sufficient. Looks like this plant is not it. All I am willing to commit to is water it once a week or so, maybe feed them every 3 or 6 month. High maintanance houseplants (and people) is not my cup of tea :-).

I also have an ctenanthe lubbersiana and it has started losing leaves. The other day I also noticed it was growing mold, so I removed the top layer of soil. Today I noticed it had mold growing all over the soil again. I am not sure if this is due to watering it too much or something else. The big issue is that the plant appears to be dying and I'm not quite sure what to do. I've used fertilizer, watered it according to the care tag on the plant, and followed all of the rules. The temperature and humidity haven't really changed at all, so I don't know what is going on. I also checked the soil for pests and I didn't notice anything. If someone could please help me, I would appreciate it!
