Does kohlrabi overwinter?

I planted kohlrabi seed probably a bit too late last year. Seedlings came up and grew to about 6 inches high, but no bulbing occurred on the stems before cold weather set in.

Despite the fact that it's about 7 degrees F outside here in the mid-Hudson Valley as I write this, I noticed in the thaw we had about a week ago that the little kohlrabi plants were green and sort of perky, possibly still alive?

Do these guys overwinter or am I hallucinating?

It definitely DOES over winter here, in zone 8. I planted some along with cabbages last fall. They all got up to 8-10", with 6 -8 leaves when it got cold. In January our lows dropped to mid teens(14, 15, 16F) several nights and 90% of the nights had been freezing cold. SURPRISE ! my kohlrabies and cabbages are fine and they now show signs of growth, when lows are around 30F.

If your kohlrabies have survived 7F and look green, chances are they will make it. Since your winters are much harsher, I woulk cover tham with straw or dry fall leave (Oak leaves are best). I did not cover mine at all.

They will stand weather similar to the turnip. Just remember they are programmed to reproduce as soon as daylenght increses after over wintering, so you will probably not see any "bulb" growth but seed growth,
