A gadget question

I've been exploring gardening sites and gadgets they have for sale and found one in particular that I'd like to save up for and buy if it works.

That's a bean/pea sheller. There are hand-cranked ones for under $50 and others, more expensive, that are electric and are supposed to shell peas and beans quickly.

Has anyone used one of these shellers, and if so, did it work reasonably well?

Below is is the blurb for an electric version.

Here is a link that might be useful: Mr. Pea Bean Sheller

Anney, that one is on my list to get too. There was some discussion about this gadget, on the beans & legumes forum, last year. Rodger, one of Gardenweb's legume (especially cowpeas) experts has it and says it works great. I just need to get moving and order one!

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can find that discussion to check out that line. I saw the same one elsewhere on the net for a LOT more money.

I'm planning to plant lots of spring peas, cowpeas, and limas that all require shelling along with three other beans, and I'm not sure I can hand-shell as many beans as I want to freeze to last through next winter. If it works, it will be well worth it, and I can share it with my neighbors as well.

I have been looking into a sheller as well. I love fresh or frozen english peas. I can not bring my self to eat the frozen ones from the store anymore. The problem is I just dont have the time to shell as many as I need to keep a supply through winter. I even involved my 2 kids and still cant keep up.

Can you post a link of the sheller you are looking at?

nevermind. LOL I dindt see you posted that. Wow for 40 bucks seem like a good deal. Just wish it had a hopped. Hmmmmm I wonder if something could be made to work as a hopper instead of hand feeding them. I like the fact that you can hook up your mixer and make it electric.

I'm interested in the electric one (that I'll have to save for since it's $200), but I don't think the lack of a hopper would turn me off the one you're interested in. Maybe you could set up a feeder/hopper, though even without one, I'll bet it's much quicker than hand-shelling.

George, I couldn't find a discussion by Rodger about this Mr. Pea sheller, but Shot from Georgia did discuss his in a post and apparently loves it.

He said it works on the principle of a washing machine wringer. You put the whole green pods into it, crank it, and the rubber rollers force the beans out of the pods. The pods must be fresh and flexible so the beans can pop out of them under pressure. You can't shell dry or older tough-podded beans with it -- apparently it crushes dry beans, pods and all, and mashes tough pods with their beans because the pods won't open under pressure to release the beans.

One site suggests blanching fresh beans 1-4 minutes first and then running them through the sheller for even better results.
