Hello! There are several great brands offering quality upholstery textiles. What you should really look for is a backed fabric with 15,000 + double rubs. That will ensure durability. Also, have your sofa protected against stains. This will make any accidents easy clean up.

Great sofa. I would recommend Knoll Textiles, such as Classic Boucle, Cato, or Spencer. All are very durable, easy to clean, and appropriate for mid-century pieces. I travelled back to Mid-Century via my memory and I recalled that most of my friends mom's had sofas covered in Boucle fabric or heavy duty Olefin. The Olefin wasn't naturally produced fabric and it was ugly but lasted forever. The Boucle was soft and had 'slubs' of thread in it that were always interesting colors. Peace.

agree with others here. Our midcentury sofa was dark brown Boucle with a gold thread. The Olefin was a little later, I think, usually called Hurculan (sp?).Think Hurcules.- impossible to ruin....remember some naugahyde then too- could do for a more modern mid-century look (solid or tufted back and seat (perhaps). If you consider that, it should be a midcentury color-Orange, turcoise and even white - all washable, Would paint the wood tone in that case as well. Just another idea depending on the mood you'd like to create.

I would re-upholster this classic in a medium heather grey with buttons on the back. Make sure you have the bottom seats turn-over-able.
The grey can be decorated to look contemporary with stainless legs or traditional with black wooden legs. Add some fun cushions in your favourite colours with funky designs or florals!

I recommend a solid, clear and bright-toned chenille - something spring-like, such as coral or pale teal. Would add a pop of color, and be welcoming and comfy regardless of whether you're in shorts and a tank top, or dressed to the 9's hosting a dinner party.
I wouldn't add buttons or any other details that would disrupt the clean lines. You could add chocolate soft canvas piping to accentuate the lines of the piece.

I'd also move it along the wall, under the artwork, add some armless chairs on either side for a nice sitting area, and a storage ottoman for a coffeetable, with a teak or wood rectangular tray on top. That way you can use the ottoman for relaxing, or add the tray when entertaining.

Remember Boucle' is nubby and rough textured...though authentic it is rough feeling..not cozy and comfortable. Just a thought. I like the thought of chenille better

Boucle is not immune to stains, dirt or grime. It is washable in the washing machine but that makes it tough when it's a sofa fabric. Your Sunbrella or ultra suede would be most practical for a family with young children and/or pets.

Thanks Karen Interiors for reminding me how impractical Boucle is for families. I was just remembering what the mid-century sofas I saw growing up looked like.

Check out Knoll fabrics. They have lots of fabric that has withstood the test of time and is very durable. Also check out Modern Fabrics Co. online. They have great retro fabric at great prices. Also, for a mid century look, replace those loose back cushions with a tight back with a welt down the middle for stability and tighten up the seat cushion for a cleaner look. It will be drop dead gorgeous! Lucky find.

Whatever you do, use a solid or tone-on-tone pattern that reads solid. then you will have something that you never tire of, and it will be a great backdrop for fabulous fun pillows. Get rid of all the extraneous cording, seaming, etc, and make it as sleek and simple as possible. I agree with mmbuzz above; get rid of those loose back cushions.
Oh, and use a reputable upholsterer, not the cheap old guy your friend knows....you get what you pay for!

Check out Restoration Hardware website - (depending on the look you are seeking, whether you have pets or children,) I think your couch would be stunning in an unbleached-lined linen. Maybe down-filled for extra cushy.

Would love to see this sofa in a light charcoal Belgian linen with black piping, seat and back cushions would need to be re-stuffed/filled and I would recomend adding a skirt to base of sofa. With simple tailored pleat at each corner and one in the middle.
Scatter cushions, I would use your wall art's colour as inspiration from the room, a couple 50cm x 50cm feather filled in block red with charcoal piping, the others, say another 2 but smaller at 45cm square I would do in a pattern or modern floral,

I love the lines of this sofa. I would do a neutral fabric-not ultrasuede because that would cheapen it. There's lots of nice twill fabrics out there or, depending on how formal you want to be, a velveteen would be stunning. You might take a look at sunbrella's newer interior fabrics-they are beautifuI. Darkening the legs would give the sofa a more updated look.

I like a classic look on mid-century reupholstered furniture. Accents the design features and lets the furniture breathe in the space.

i would love to see that couch in boucle and warm white color with colorful pillows,a big piece like this is expensive so you need a neutral color and change the pillows when need a new redo. It look so fabulous,and i can see that in white.

We do a lot of restoration/reupholstery for mid-century modern pieces and tend to find that the following textile companies have great products!
