That's what I do if they come up too thick -- carefully separate and pot up individually. I generally pop them from a cell pack into a 4" size pot -- I find it's a little big at first, but they grow fairly fast and it's a good size by the time they're ready to go out.

I grew both tomatoes and peppers last year. And yep I potted em both up just the same in those 16 ounce solo cups. And i might have lost only 2-5 percent of seedling due to them having roots tangled up. Just be gentle seperating the seedlings that are in same cells if roots are entangled.

You should be fine.

Well thanks to both of you for the advice. I had read that they were "particular" about their roots and of course I had already planted them 3-4 per cell. (Probably should find out things before I jump into them head first). Anyway, thanks for your help. Cbad

Good advice from both. Jumping in is part of the fun and experimentation of gardening. That is one of the reasons I love it so much. Have you ever planted a garden before?

I'm lazy and never quite got the "potting up" thing - I just start all of my in 18 oz cups. I also poke holes in the bottom of the cups and leave them sitting in a pan of water so that watering is simple and infrequent. When I need fertilizer? I choose a liquid variety I put in the water so that's simple too :)

Hi Chris, I've done gardens for some time but just have never gotten around to the sweet frying peppers. Little did I know that they would take off and all of them would come up...I totally believed the stories that they are hard to grow. I hope my family and friends like sweet italian frying peppers cuz there are a lot of them.

Gblack, The 18 oz. solo cups are what I pot up to. It probably would be easier to not pot up, but then I wouldn't be able to wring my hands and wonder if they have met with some horrible fate that I caused!!! Anyway all of you have given me confidence and the ones that I have potted up seem to be none the worse for wear. Will keep you posted. Thanks for all the help. Cbad

cbad, we grew Jimmy Nardello (Italian frying pepper) last year and it was SO good! I used it for everything and it was sweeter than Carmen. The plants were very productive and so had plenty to dehydrate.

A lot of plants are considered "delicate" but with care, you can separate and pot up almost any plant.
